    I have two PC's which now have 4 gigs of ram each (up from 2 gigs.) The Initial and Maximum size of the paging file are now both 4092. What should I set these to? I am using 3gb switch on both machines.

    if these machines are for audio only i'd set the pagefile to *don't use*, but possibly not all machines/configurations stand that ... check it out in a seperate hardware-profile to avoid surprise. otherwise you should be able to lower it down to 1 GB (1024 MB) without problems.

    cm, I probably explained badly: this is only for streaming VI. here is the tweak I'm talking about:


    Fixed Swap File (Virtual Memory)

    Select the Advanced tab of the Systems applet and then select the Performance settings button. Then select the Advanced page. In here it is possible to customise the Virtual Memory. For custom size, this is often recommended to be 1.5 to 2 times the amount of your total RAM for both initial and maximum size. Set this to a fixed minimum and maximum value according to your existing RAM

    yep, there are three options - custom size, system managed, no pagefile.
    in any case it would be important for an audio machine to have the values for initial and maximum set to the same number, otherwise the system might decide somewhen to increase the pagefile.

    for computers with 2 GB RAM or more i don't know for what to use the pagefile (except slowing down the computer), so most of the time i'm setting this to *don't use*, but there are certain configurations which do not like such a setting (eg. photoshop is always moaning about it).

    preloaded samples cannot be moved to the pagefile (for obvious reasons) and the remaining 1 GB kernel space should be plenty enough for windows and everything else needed to run from this memory space.
    in case your setup does not like the *don't use* setting, what can happen, i'd say select 1024 MB, which is then the same as available kernel space.
