    Hi!

    Can somebody tell me can I use Vienna samples with Logic Express? I have been thinking of getting the new Appassionata Strings. It says in the specs list that they support AU format, which also is what Express uses. Does anyone have experience does this collection work in Logic Express?

    the Vienna Instruments are working fine with Logic Express, as you mention only AU is needed (or VST in case you are using such a host)

    just the performance tool (which is only needed for most products from the pro edition and horizon series in EXS-format) cannot be used with logic express and requires Logic Pro

    Thank you for your answer! Can you think any problems or difficulties, if I only have the appassionata strings and not the other instument libraries? The earlier Vienna libraries. I will normally do film music and I will try to use the real solo instruments, such as violin, piano, woodwinds etc. Appassionata will do as my string ensamble. I think it is very good ensable of violins, violas, cellos and basses. Very realistic.

    i can't (and would not like to) comment on difficulties combining real instruments with samples, because im biased ...
    technically you should follow the system requirements and have a fast seperate harddrive (seperate from your system drive) and at least 1 GB, better 2 GB, RAM to allow loading a sufficient amount of patches ...

    I have G5 dual 2GHz, 2.5GB RAM and external Lacie 250GB with FireWire 800, also I have M-audio 49e Keyboard. I believe they should work. What is the "Syncrosoft License Control Center 5.2.1.0 or higher" mentioned in system requirements?

    also mentioned in the system requirements is a ViennaKey (basically a syncrosoft USB protection device, which is also used eg. by steinberg) - you need such a device attacched on the computer you want to run any Vienna Instruments.
    the license control center is a tool (software) to download and manage the licenses, it is available at the syncrosoft website and comes also on the installer CD of every Vienna Instruments Collection.

    I have combined samples (including plenty of VSL ones) with real instruments. On many occassions it has been extremely sucessful with the impression that everything is totally real.

    However the results can be a little unpredicable and i have heard mixes in the past where, for example, a nicely produced (and sounding) string section created by samples has been over dubbed with real instruments. The result has been the samples ended up being the weakest link.

    One of the great benefits of the VSL library is how everything "just works" accoustically within and between different sectons of the orchestra and VSL should be commended for achieving this, however once you leave this domain compatability isn't guaranteed so I guess experimentation and your own results will give you your answer!

    Can Logic Express open Logic Pro session files? I ask, because so many composers don't know how to save proper MIDI files and I was wondering if the cheaper option (to correct these mistakes) would be viable (with something like a Mac mini).

    Thank you all very much! Nice to have all this knowledge before I buy the product. I think the realistic sound depends on so many things and like you said, the good end result is achieved after experiencing and trying many different things out. It takes time and patience.

    Not sure but think the answer is no, reasons as follows:

    Logic Express has limitations on the number of plug-ins, and audio tracks so a Logic Pro Song environment would probably not re-format correctly in Logic Express.

    Logic Pro is an Apple Pro-App Logic Express isn't to preserve income Apple probably restricts inter-change-ability between these apps.

    I did look at my Logic Pro help pages and it makes no reference that I could see to exporting files for Logic Express.

    But it's still worth you posting a question on the Apple Logic Express forum.

    OK thanks. I suppose that I was just trying to save money by not buying an application that I wouldn't consider using for anything apart from correcting the mistakes of others. [8-)]

    A solution for you ( and even works on PC's) would be to purchase a second hand copy of Logic 5 (I think this was still old enough to work on PC's) for not very much money at all. Then ask the composers to use the option <<Export to Logic 4.8>> When saving their songs.

    Or alternatively dis the beige box and move to the 21st century with Logic Pro, a lovely shiney new Mac and forget viruses, 80's graphics and the future nightmare of Vista [:D]

    The trouble is if the composer is unable to save a MIDI file, it may not be much better asking them to save as Logic 5. [8-)]

    I won't change to Mac because Nuendo doesn't work on Mac Pro, and on the Mac Amateurs it is too slow...! Logic is "feature shy" compared with N3.

    BTW Vista looks pretty good and will be a killer OS in a year or so. [:D]

    Yes exportng midi files can create all sorts on confusions and f you are relying on the midi data to re-create a score you don't want the Viola players playing the Tuba part (well I would [:D] )

    Just to correct myself you can't export from Logic Pro 7 to Logic 4.8 You have to save the Logic Pro (7.++) song open it in Logic 6.4.3 then save it as a Logic 4.8 (don't ask why)

    I'm not sure that Nuendo is a like for like competitor for Logic. Nuendo (a very well respected application) appears to me to be centered around post production and recording whereas Logic orbits around creativity and origination. Of course both apps do a huge range of functions very well but are aimed at different markets.

    You are correct that Nuendo is geared towards Post, but it has all the features of Cubase. Maybe Logic has caught up in the recent updates, but I couldn't do without Tempo Warp for a start.
