  • New User; Q about changing articulations

Hello fellow VI users. I just recently purchased my first Vienna Instruments, and am totally new to the interface, so i had a question about something. Forgive me if it is easily answered elsewhere, but im suffering from information overload right now [:)]

Anyhow, so i got Orchestral Strings 1 and 2. As far as implementing mutlitple articulations, i am still a bit confused as to how things work. As an example to my question, lets say i am using the Cello set. i have loaded in the L1-VC 8 Articulation Combinations matrix. Now, in the patch assign window i can select different artics... so lets say i am playing a detache sound, but then in the piece i am composing i want to change to a flautando. Do i have to load an entirely new instance of L1 VC-8 set on a second Instrument Channel, or is there a way of "automating" and patch change within the first instance (assuming i leave 'space' for it within the actual MIDI notes)?

am i making sense? i guess i am just trying to be RAM-efficient, and would like to avoid loading an entire second instrument just for ONE seperate articulation which technically is *already* loaded in the first instance.

forgive my verbosity. just wanted to give some clarity to my rookie-ish question.

    thanks in advance!

PS these strings are just about the most gorgeous things i've ever heard!

PPS: im using Logic 7. Mac Dual 2.5Ghz, 2.5G Ram

  • The articulation buttons you see in the VI window is keyswitches ( routed to a keynote on your keyboard, eg. C0 ) - Which one to use in the specific case is labelled on the buttons in the VI's window.
(If there is more than one row you normally switch row using the modwheel)

So just push the relevant keynote on your keyboard and the articulation
    changes.

  • I was in exactly the same situation 2 days ago. (Also a similar system)

The manual is not as thorough as it could be, but the video tutorials to download are excellent. I followed the examples as presented very articulately by Paul and it all became clear, or at least the basics of switching between articulations by creating a custom matrix became clear.

It also became obvious that there is a lot more to this instrument than just switching articulations!

  • Hello and welcome to the VSL - world!
I recommend to watch the Video tutorials

There I'll guide you through a short melody.
You'll learn how to install different articulations and how to
    switch between of them.

  • hey guys! just wanted to say thanks for the info! i got it working. It's exactly like Ohmforce's preset-morphing function, if i had known that i'm sure it would have clicked with me earlier.

one quick follow up; the Modwheel is used to switch from the A column to the B column of artics. is there any way to set a DIFFERENT controller to do this, such as a pedal or data slider? i only as because im using a Roland as my controller, which have the annoying Modulation/Pitchbend wheel combo, and it has a very tight, fussy "throw" to get it fully open.

no biggie, i can always edit the hyperdraws post-recording, but an easier controller would make activating this LIVE much easier!

    thanks again!

  • Click on the Control Edit button at the top right.

In that window you will see H-SPAN and V-SPAN for assigning what controls the switches between Horizonatl and Vertical cells(e.g. 1A,1B,1C is vertical, 1A,2A,3A is horizonrtal).

On the right of each of these H & V sections in Control Edit is a menu where you can choose controller, speed, keyswitch etc. If it is already on Controller 1 (modwheel) you will see CC1 just to the left and this is wheree you can assign different controllers by clicking on CC 1 and choosing from the menu

e.g if you want to assign a sustain pedal that would be CC 64 (but of course with a pedal you will only have a two way switch as opposed to a wheel or slider.

I'm using Logic and in the environment it's possible to use a transformer to change one type of controller data into another.
