  • accessing the middle of a sample?

From day the demo cube unexpectedly arrived in the post a couple of months ago I knew this was a library I had to get, even though it also means getting Giga and a fair amount of PC-related hardware. Now the deed has been done, and I’m waiting for everything to arrive, I’ve been pondering over an issue that users here might be able to clarify for me:

Am I correct in assuming that Gigastudio can only playback from the beginning of a sample? I ask this because my E6400’s can playback a sample from any point, and I’ve come to rely on this feature to select the most appropriate part of a sample for each note of a phrase. For instance, the last note of a phrase would typically be the last portion of a sample starting from a point that makes the note the correct length.

Is anything like this possible with vsl/giga? Or is this technique redundant because of factors I’ve yet to discover?

    Many thanks, Ian Lawson

PS. Not sure which forum to use, as my query involves both vsl and gigga.

  • Well, this is of course Sampler dependant, not Library dependant.

Gigastudio 2.5, the current version, can play only up to 2000 samples after the start of the sample. That's a couple of milliseconds.

It's enough to cut some off of the attack, but if we could jump further into the waves, that would add a lot more possibilities to Giga.

I'm sure their next version will have total sample start control.

You can set the sample start value per sample region in the Editor.

  • Thanks for the information. As you say, it is a platform issue rather than a library issue. But I suppose I was wondering whether the library itself, in some way, overcomes the lack of this feature?

It will be interesting to see if Gigastudio can implement this feature – it would still be useful even if the play back is delayed a fraction of a second.

    Regards, Ian

  • If the library wants to overcome this issue in Giga 2.5, it has to offer extra sets of samples, that are trimmed or cropped. Quite a waste of space, as you can imagine. [:)]

  • I know that EXS24 has a function where you can assign the sample start to a controller #.

Maybe Giga also has this feature somewhere.....?

  • No.

    Just a fixed setting.
