What are Appassionata strings?

Is it some sort of articulation or playing style? How many players, etc?

Can someone point me to an audio example.. or a peice where they are used a lot?

Barber's adagio is one of my favorite peices ever. I'm not sure which parts would qualify as the appoisionata.. unless it means "passionate?"

As Herb wrote: The main part of the violins used for the "Adagio" are our Apassionata Violins.

Hello
The Appassionata Strings are very usefull for a big string sound. So I took it for
an accompaniment of a christmas song.
I dare to show it here because it is completely different to the Adagio of Barber.
It gives a further impression... so there are really lots of possibilities of applications
for these lovely Strings.

For this case I used some VSL-solo-instruments in addition to the accompaniment.
Players:
-Soloists, Cimbasso, SoloCello, TenorSax(me), Solo Viola, Solo Violin
-Violins 1 Appassionata Strings (runs from Orchestra Strings)
-Violins 2 Appassionata Strings
-Violas Orchestra Strings
-Cellos Orchestra Strings
-Contra-Basses Orchestra Strings
