  • Farm layouts - what yours?

I'm curious as to how different people lay out their VSI farms.
I have 5 farms + the DAW (if I decide to use it as well). 4 PC's with 3 gig, 1 Macbook Pro with 2 gigs and a G5 DAW with 4 gigs.

The biggest challenge is the string layout. So far I'm thinking about
distributing the extended string lib accross 2 machines. Putting Brass on one,
woodwinds on another, the remaining on the 5th. I might put solo strings on the daw, but I use DP with TDM, so I would have use VST wrapper and I'm not sure how stable that set up would be.

How are you guys laying out your farms?

  • You can find a layout example here: http://www.createfilmscores.net/?page_id=17">http://www.createfilmscores.net/?page_id=17

At the studio where I work, our layout is made of 8 Mac Minis (Woodwind, Orchestral / Chamber Strings, Solo Strings, Brass), and 2 Powermac G5 (Percussion, Harp).

I know John Frizzel's setup is based on two G5s (Woodwind / Brass), and his sequencer (Quad G5) on which he hosts the Strings in Plogue Bidule and get the audio through Rewire.

Ed Shearmur's setup is also based on 8 Mac Minis. I'm not sure how he spreads his samples though.

  • 5 PC slaves

    Strings
    Woods
    Brass1
    Brass2
    Percussion/Harp

Only the string one is has completely filled up its ram (a pitty since I would REALLY like to be able to load my solo strings as well). I cant move them to another PC though, since I use the solo strings layerd with my orchestral stuff.

Thanks for the reply Jerome. That's another approach for the DAW that I could try - using Ploque and rewire it into DP, altough rewire hasn't proved to be such a stable set up for my rig in the past.

Thats the problem I foresee - strings all on one is going to cut me off from some of the lib. Everything else I think will be ok on seperate machines. I have thought about spliting the Brass 1 and 2, but mostly I'm thinking of getting my strings set up as best as possible.

Tripit -- you mentioned you use DP with TDM (as do I), and I noticed this post from you. Last time I checked, DP doesn't support Rewire in TDM mode. Has this changed as far as you know?

    Thanks,
    Peter

  • No as far as I know, rewire still isn't supported with MOTU/DAE. I haven't actually tired it in 5.11 yet, but I'm not holding my breath.

I've been on a one man campagn to get MOTU to update their use of DAE. They are sorely behind the ball and while DP5.xx supports DAE7, it does not support all the features in DAE7.

I am SO with you there. Better DAE support from DP is my top wish in life (OK, maybe "world peace", THEN better DAE support). And this after MOTU advertised DP as "the best sequencing front end for Pro Tools Hardware". If I can help you in your campaign, let me know. Of course I'd settle for Digi supporting AU, which would help a lot -- especially for VI users!

  • On a related note, check out Protools 7.3 Digi released 2 days ago. Lots of stuff for composers in it, incl. some sort of integrated export to Sibellius feature. [H]
