    Hi! There,

    Just a question here:

    I have been using Pro tools LE for 3 years and now I have shifted to Cubase 4.

    I am using the new Vienna Instruments within Cubase.

    I want to be able to record the outputs of a VST instrument into another audio track in real time when i am playing off the keyboards.

    This is at the moment not possible - cauz I cant find anything to do this.

    Its simple in Pro tools - U send a BUS Out and select it as an input in another track.

    How do you guys work in Cubase?

    I cant have a new instance for every little line in Cubase.

    I need to be able to record Audio output from the VSTi into different tracks and use the same instance to then do something else.

    I just dont get it - How are you guys working with Cubase in this regard?

    Any help will be much appreiciated. I tried the cubase forum but no concrete replies. I cant believe u cant do this - if not, its a disaster!

    DG is right.

    Cubase's concept differs from ProTools insofar that it was a MIDI-savvy program from the very beginning. The idea was to record a MIDI-track rather than an audio-track, which makes sense in a lot of ways: the amount of recorded data is only a fraction of the respective audio-data, you are able change tempo, pitch and/or single notes of your performance later, you may copy your performance (or parts of it) and use it with another instrument, etc.

    The result is the same as it would be when you record an audio-track directly.

    In case you _need_ audio, you simply select "Export Audio" form the file-command-menue, and print a selected range of a single track (or all tracks) to disk, so to say. This is a process faster than real-tiem, BTW.

    You can use Altiverb however you like. If you have a monster of a machine you could theoretically use one instance on each VST output. However, what I do is create a few groups, load an instance of Altiverb into each and set the output for each VST to the relevant orchestral section.

    As other posters have pointed out, Cubase does work differently to many of its rivals. The "Freeze" function replaces the need to "bounce" in most situations, and this in conjunction with the "Learn & Optimize" functions of VI will allow you to build up really complex multi-instrument mixes.

    However (and there is always a "however" with Cubase), I note you say you have Cubase 4, and there are some very serious bugs with Cubase 4 and "Freeze". In particular, it appears not to save that an "Instrument" has been unloaded after a freeze, which means that if you reload the project, your memory can become quickly gazumped for not particularly obvious reason. From what I can work out on the Steinberg forums this is not a fault with VI, but a fault with Cubase 4 (not yet fixed in 4.01).

    There is also a problem with "reallocation" of VST's to tracks when loading a project which is mighty confusing. But it doesn't happen in all configurations and I am still trying to work out what causes it.

    Dietz, in Logic when I freeze a track, the VSL Server continues to use the same amount of CPU. Also, when say 20 instances of VI are loaded, with no patches or anything loaded in them, the VSL server in Activity Monitor shows cpu usage of about 60% (on my dual 2.0 G5). This happens *even if I bypass the VI instance* so that it is turned off. I must *unload* the instance altogether, and then the VSL Server's CPU usage progressively drops down the more instances I unload. Is this normal?

    ...the same here....20 VI empty instances, running Logic and the cpu meters
    are going up.....(?!?)

    To be specific: Logic's meters do not go up, VSL Server cpu usage goes up in the Activity Monitor - and machine responsiveness decreases with the more stances loaded (even if they are empty of any samples and not used, and even if they are "bypassed".

    ...here on 2.3 Dualcore running 10.4.8 8gb ram the Logic meter go up.....
