  • Really dumb idea?

Okay, I just had what might be a really stupid idea... but maybe not.

For all you > 4GB RAM, G5 or Mac Pro guys, I wonder if it would be possible to access another whack of RAM by having another account running in the background via fast user switching? The processes should be totally independent memory-wise, and can, at least theoretically, continue to run for all users. And if a user who doen't have screen access (i.e., a "background" account) can receive email, then the network must be running, so I'm guessing you could pass midi/audio over TCP, which is generally fast enough locally. I haven't got enough RAM to really need it, but if anybody has a 6 or 8 GB RAM Mac Pro, or something similar, it might be worth a try. Bidule as the "remote" host, Wormhole2 for audio, MIDI Over Lan for midi... maybe?

ps - I realize that fast user switching requires much more overhead to run, and that this isn't a very memory-efficient way of doing things. But it's a thought.

  • Aha! What about this?

Any experience anybody? If my 3 machines could dynamically share my 3 dongles my life would become _much_ simpler.

--- This seems like a possible solution to on-the-fly distribution of licenses over VI slaves, so I'm moving this to it's own thread ---

  • Yesterday, I tried loading 2.5GB of VI samples in Plogue Bidule on a Powermac Dual 2.5 Ghz. The DSP indicator said "80%" (I'm using an RME PCI card). It was simply unusable - clicks, pops and crackles all the time.

My guess is that, after a certain amount of samples in memory, the DSP can't keep up. Now, this will change of course according to your computer's raw performances and the quality of your DSP.

But still - I doubt you could load more than 2.5GB of samples on one computer and have it work perfectly.

Actually, if anybody was able to load 2.5GB of samples without encountering any problem, I would be interested in knowing on what computer and with what audio interface.

  • Hi Jerome,

I can load 2.7 to 2.9 of samples with Windows XP. No audio interface used, only FX-Teleport and Bidule Vst.

    Your 2.5 barrier seems strange

If you have an Intel-Mac, perhaps you can install Windows and test yourself.

  • Hey Stephane,

I was able to load up to 3GB of samples, but my PowerMac Dual 2Ghz can't keep up.

  • I had to just double-check how dumb I really was. The problem with the second user account idea is that the VI is installed for all users, so, although it does work, it doesn't launch another vsl-server and hence there's no memory advantage. If I'd thought about it for 2 seconds I would have figured that out... so sad. [:|]

I see another "mad" idea to load a lot of samples :

virtual computer, like I did in this thread

I'm too busy to test this pretty mad workaround, but it could be interesting if someone else do it.

    example :
A intel computer with more than 4Gb of Ram (8, 16, 32....), windows x64, 3.5gb for each 32bits virtual machine, Fx-teleport, VI (or a Vst Host + VI)
