  • The new Mac G5's are out

Well, the leaked info was correct!
    G5 processors - up to Dual 2Gb
    Optical SPDIF in/out
    Up to 8Gb RAM
Let's look at that one again..... Eight DIMM slots supporting up to 8GB of main memory!!

    VSL/EXS24 users rejoice!! [:D]

I believe Apple just nuked the competition.....

Competition ? competition are between users because Apple G5 are made with IBM [:)]

  • At Truespec, we have 12GB boards, so 8GB is still behind. Besides, it doesn't matter how much RAM is available on the motherboard if the application isn't written to take advantage of it.

Besides, GigaStudio is on the PC. And until a Kontakt version of VSL is released, we can't know if having 8GB of RAM available will make a difference with the Kontakt engine.

The winner here MIGHT be Logic if the EXS24 can handle that much, however, if it can, than Logic must be written to extend beyond 32 instances of their virtual instruments.

The hype is great, but better to wait for the software applications to see what they do to take advantage of the capabilities of 8GB of RAM.

  • If you watch the WWDC webcast, you'll see Gerhard Lengeling of Emagic (about 45 minutes in) talking about the number of stereo voices his team got out of a software sampler. One assumes this is the EXS24.

He claims over 1000 (one thousand) at 24 bit. That's not a bad start......

I have as much trust today for Emagic and Gerhard Dingaling as I did Bagdad Bob, Saddam's press secretary.

The realistic problem for me is call Gerhard and ask him how he got those numbers. How did he set up the Mac and with what test/sequence did he use to get there? See if he'll publish the answers.

When we asked those basic questions on the PC side (pre-July 1, 2002), we were told, "We can't give out parts lists as that would be endorsing another company." And that came from the head of the PC quality control sector.

So the claim is great. But how did they get there? Until I see hard fast tests and a replicatable series of benchmark tests, it's just another unsubstantiated Emagic "glitzed" number. Beware, YOUR mileage may vary.

How about computer honesty. That's measurable!
