  • Vers. 1.1 - Anomalies in GUI operations - Logic & DP

The new software is really great - - especially the new dynamic range control, which helps to reduce of the sense of "stepped" dynamics as one goes from one velocity layer to another.

However, behavior of the GUI display is rather odd, in both Logic and Digital Performer. On my computer (dual processor 2.5 GHz G5) pushing the "Show Window" button results in the almost instantaneous appearance of the GUI. However, if I have several VI instances loaded, pushing the "Show Window" button for a particular instance of VI, brings up the GUI of the instrument most recently accessed. In other if I have a violin loaded into Instrument 1 and a cello loaded on Instrument 2 and have most recently accessed the GUI of the cello, pressing the "Show Window" button on the panel for audio instrument 1 brings the GUI for the Cello, not the violin to the fore. If I've arranged Logic's windows and placed the GUI windows so that I can see some piece of them outside any of Logic's open windows, I can click on a visble part of the desired GUI window and bring it t the foreground. In this way, I can get both GUI windows to the foreground. Also, when I close the most recently accessed window, the desired window pops to the foreground. To get both windows to stay in the foreground, one can also minimize Logic's open windows (though one does not have to close the event list). In DP the behavior is similar.

To me it appears that some wires got crossed here - -but, in practice, all this greatly interferes with workflow. Pushing the "Show Window" button for Instrument 1 should consistently produce the Instrument 1 GUI, pushing the "Show Window" for Instrument 2 should consistently produce the Instrument 2 GUI, etc. Hopefully this is something that will get fixed very soon.

  • The "show window" boxes don't appear with most (any other?!) AU plug-ins. Clicking on the plug-in box in the environment or arrange page (in Logic) should open the plug-in widow directly. I cannot understand why there is a second command layer which slows the process down and makes VI operation somewhat clunky - unless there are unresolved incompatabilities with the AU system.

You are right, of course. I know of no other plugin that functions this way. I think this was a design decision made for a variety of reasons including the large size of the GUI interface - - which also cannot be resized.

In any case, this arrangement allows one to access many VI instances more easily than if the screen were cluttered with many instances of the large GUI - - of course, in he usual arrangement one need only click the link button on the interface to prevent screen clutter. Nonetheless, this arrangement has worked well enough on my system until V. 1.1 - - in which pressing the "Show Window" button brings the last accessed GUI instance to the fore instead of the one which the user has indicated that they want to work on.
