    i am a long time Cubase user, it is installed on my main DAW as my primary sequencer. However, I own a copy of Logic that I've installed on another mac computer. I would like to use Logic to simple act as a host for VI and other virtual instruments on this computer, getting its midi info from Cubase on a the other computer. I do not know if this is possible or how to do it. Can someone explain how to set up this computer to receive midi info and trigger VI on it?

    What I think you may need to do is as follows (I am assuming that your Mac has its own MIDI interface and that is configured to receive MIDI data from the interface attached to the "master" computer.)

    1.Go to the Clicks and Ports page in Logic's Environment

    2.Locate the port on the Physical Input object that you want to connect to the external computer (the ports are labeled)

    3.Create a Channel Splitter object and wire it to the appropriate port on the Physical input. (When you wire it bring the cable to the back of the Channel Splitter).

    4.Select the Channel Splitter, hold down the option key and change the page in the Environment to the Audio page. The Channel Splitter will have moved to the Audio page.

    5.Wire the 16 channels of the Channel Spliter sequentially to 16 Audio Instrument objects making sure that each Audio Instrument object is assigned to the correct MIDI channel. (Do not use the SUM port on the Channel splitter.

    6. Finally, in the Arrange Page, create a "No Output" track and select it (this will prevent MIDI feedback problems.) Let me know if this works.

    Thanks fo rthe reply. I am just getting back to my studio so will try this. The enviroment is real new to me. Just so you know, I use midiover lan to communicate between the computers. I'll try upir suggestion tonight and let you know.

    I think you solved my question, with such simplicity. As I mentioned the Envirom,ent is so new to me (being a Cubase man). But I think it is working. Will test it extensively, but all appears to be well. I am not getting a midi feedback problem, but if encounter the probelm will use your point 6 to solve it.

    I thought I postd this problem already but I do not se it.

    I have followed, with success, Stevesong's directions above with one reoccuring proble. For some reason everytime I load my song I have to rebuild the environment. The channel splitter appears to be there, but it does not work. I need to delete and rebuild the channel splitter and connections. I am using a new macpro laptop. Any ideas?

    How are you connecting between computers - - are you using MIDI interfaces for each computer or are you connecting through ethernet (part of OSX's Audio MIDI Setup)? Are both computers and interfaces turned on before you launch Logic?

    In my own experience, I've made various templates with the setup I described and they work on a daily basis without having to rebuild channel splitters and connections.

    Another option - - since you are running Logic as a host for VI's on a separate computer - - might be to use Logic's Multiplayer recording feature (see Pg. 121-122 of Logic's Reference Manual).

    jay, i have been using Logic as an VI-AU slave for about 1 1/2 years now and it is great for that. as i am a DP user i just wanted to have a giga styled rig and this has worked out great!
