  • (soon to be new user) Legato?

    Hello,

I know that for the music I will be creating, legato is a very important thing for me.. both with single insturments and groups of strings. Violins, violas, etc.

How is legato applied with the VSL.. specifically the VI's? Does it follow what you do in real-time? What is the legato tool and how does it work?

I guess I am asking about why Vienna may be better than others with legato, and how it is used.... do you somehow add "ties" in a matrix editor or something?

    Grazie.

  • It is dependant on how the notes overlap. If their is a gap between the notes, the legato is less natural. Of course this is for the mono patches. There are different legato patches for fast and slow performances. It's very easy to set up and sounds great.

  • Good to know... so it is not a tool, and rather a patch that will work better depending on the gap or overlap between notes.. which could be shored up in a matrix editor in Logic.

Any thoughts on how it compares to ECQLG's Q legato?

  • Never used it, but keep in mind. VI's legato is not a script that changes the attack of a regularly attacked sample. It's a sample of a natural legato attack. So it's pretty realistic. It's why I bought the VI. For my production (Pop/R&B) it made a huge difference in my string parts. Smoother, more natural. Amd I started orchestrating properly because the parts played more natural.

    Hi and welcome astronmr20,

please have a look at our "old"Promotion Video, where the system behind the Legato Performances is shown....

Please keep in mind that the Performance Tool shown in this video is for the Pro Edition and Horizon Series only => it is now incorporated into the new Vienna Instruments, so thereĀ“s no additional settings necessary, just load and play [:)]

Then have a look at the new Video Tutorials for the Vienna Instruments...

    Hope that helps!

    Best,

    Paul

  • Thanks Paul and folks. It seems with the VI's the sample world finally has the realism I want to be able to bring my creations to life.

my biggest dilemma now is weather to go for Chamber strings or Orch strings.

I can only afford 1 VI to start with, and if I go for Orch stings, I would have to buy 1 and 2!

  • I posted a sample of the Chamber Strings tripled up as per that thread. I was in the same boat, however I was doing Pop/R&B production, not classical. So, it's different. I can say, I was very happy I went with the Chamber Strings and the Solo Strings. I found it very versatile for my application. Also, layering the Solo Strings witht the Chmaber Strings was amazing.

Good luck. Whichever you get, you won't be sorry. It's the best software I've ever used.

  • WOW!

Now I understand what the legato tool really means... . you guys already did LOADS of work to get it right... it always references the note you are on to get to your target note.

    This stuff is scary. (:

  • yup... no messing around here!

They put in a level of time and effort to which most companies would simply think, "well, that would be nice, but it's way too much recording!"

And in the end, there's absolutely no substitute for the time they've taken! I've heard other hyped-up demos, but I personally don't think anything comes close to VSL for realism. When you can actually pass a sampled string quartet off as "the real thing", that's pretty damn good!

Done start to finish in about 3 hours with VI Solo Strings, Extended Library on Logic Pro.
(A fun little project to do, as well!)

  • This library is absolutely amazing... I'm blown away everytime I hear stuff like that. Solo string samples! Solo string samples!!!

    Amazing [:)]
