Another sad day for us all...

"Hab' mir's gelobt..." (Strauss: Der Rosenkavalier).

  • Oh, wow!! [:'(]

    Thanks for posting this.

It's so great to know that in the midst of all of this technological craziness that members of this forum can be so aware of the importance of great artists.

Schwartzkopf was amazing and revolutionary-- her mark on the world of opera, indellible. She will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.

Yes, it's sad news. She set the mark for performance of Leitmotif, and did it in a unique and very special way. I remember the TV series she did about singing, and the useful tips she generously shared with the public. She was responsible for taking much of the mystique out of opera singing, connecting the world of classical voice much closer to the public.

A wonderful contributor to the world of voice, and music in general.

    Alex.

  • As a young usher at Carnegie Hall I was fortunate to witness ES's last recital.

    WOW!

    Wow, is right.

So, what was it like being the proverbial fly on the wall? That must have been amazing.

I happened to be in NY on three rare occasions:

    1. Emil Gilels last Carnegie Hall recital
    2. Claudio Arrau's last Carnegie hall appearance (Muti, Philadelphia, Beethoven 4th Conerto)
    3. One of (?) Leontyne Price's last Carnegie Hall appearances (Barber: Knoxville Summer of 1915)

My sister was a voice major and gorded herself on Schwarzkopf's recordings. She hadn't heard and was devastated at the news.

How I wish I could have heard ES in person... just once.

  • Being a fly on the wall was great! I page turned for Maurice Andre, and handled stage seating for Cabellet's last (I think) major NY concert... she gave 55 minutes of encores and sang an entire aria looking in my eyes!
