  • Advice on Using 2 Macs with VI?

I've searched through the threads and seems like there are all sorts of ways to do this...

Is there a consensus on the best...meaning easiest and most dependable...way for me to use my G5 with Nuendo, and add a Mac Mini on just to run VI? I'm speaking about the best way to connect the two computers (I'm using a Fireface 800 but my SPDIF ins and outs are taken already).

    Thanks
    Tom

  • Hi Tom

I've a fireface 800 too. I just use two jack inputs at the back and route from the MacMini (I'm using an Edirol UA1EX).

I think you have options though:

MacMini + OSX + InternalSoundCard + RAX (or similar AU Host) then use the OSX MIDI routing s/w and take the Line Output from the Mini into two analgoue ports on the Fireface.

    Or (as i do)

MacMini + WinXP + Edirol UA1EX + VSTack + MidiOverLan and take the EA1EX (or similar) out into the analgoue ports on the Fireface.

If you look at the other threads there are issues with VI under OSX in terms of cracking and popping, but no issues in the WinXP mode.

  • I don't want to use analog ins though....I suppose I could use aDAT lightpipe...but then we start getting into clocking everything..

  • Tom - any reason not to use them? Latency is not an issue, and quality shouldn't be that noticeable - or maybe it's just my ears...
