  • VSL Server Memory Grab

Hello, Forum. I'm a new user running Vienna Instruments on an intel-based macbook Pro and trying to make the most of my two Megs of Ram! I've noticed, in the Mac "activity monitor", that when I delete an instrument or even quit the host sequencing program (in my case, Logic7.2 ) the VSL-Server is still hanging onto many Megabytes of precious RAM (and in the case of deleting instruments in the EXS Sampler it's as if the samples haven't gone away at all!) . I can't figure out why that is, or how to empty that cache manually so as to free up more ram for additional sample imputs.

    Thoughts?

  • First-- WELCOME-- make yourself at home and comfortable (take your shoes off!!) Stay a while, and come back often!!

You're on an Intel, so there may be some issues we PPC tag-alongs might not understand.

But since were are 10.4.7-aware there may yet be something that binds us together still...

If unused samples are dumped, the resources WILL be available simply because the resources will not be called for-- no matter what the Activity Viewer says.

However, to wipe the slate clean, quit your DAW and restart it. That will refresh all of the previous virtual memory data paging in an out of RAM. if you dumped your unused samples before restarting, your next load will be better optimized. (No accounting for Syncrosoft...!!)

  • thanks for the advice and reassurance.... it's a whole new world this software sampling thing for me, so I imagine I will be staying QUITE a while!
