  • Track Names in Logic

    Hey all,

I've noticed something quite irritating with VI and Logic...

When I'm working, and I load up an instance of VI...I name the object as a Flute...or whatever, and then work. However, when I revisit the song again later...the track names have dissappeared...the object names are still the same, but the track name is now "untitled"...which becomes a problem because I look at my arrange window, and see Untitled for all of my VIs...things get confusing and frustrting quickly. I've been to the Apple website about this...and I saw that I can change the track names in the arrange window, but this seems REALLY unnecessary...again, I'm thinking this is a VI problem since it's the only plug-in that I've had this problem with...

thoughts? Comments? Anyone else with this same behaviour?

  • Same behaviour here,

in EXS the Instrument NAmes used to show up in the track showing the loaded patch.
Now "Untitled " seems to be a VI Server issue. Please Golem fix it! It will help our workflow!!!

  • This happens with any plug-in that doesn't handle names like Logic plug-ins. Same problem with Kontact, Atmosphere, Kompact Player, etc. so it's not a VI problem really. Any multi output plug bahaves incorrectly as well.

  • Instead of showing 'Track name" view "instrument name" ...now you can name it whatever you like.

  • Vienna Instruments is 3/4 a stand-alone program, so I could see how this could be difficult.

Just out of interest, though, how many players are you using? I've been using a couple per instrument at most. Having to name all the EXS instances was a huge PITA, but this isn't a big deal for me.

  • Thanks for the suggestion on viewing instrument names...I'll have to try it..we'll see how it affects the naming of regions I create...which is where more problems come in...."which instrument does this region belong to?"...especially a problem if I start moving regions around (or accidentally move them...which happened yesterday)

Nick, thus far...I think the most instances of VI I've used in 1 session has been 7 or 8...is that what you mean by "players"...or do you mean the DAW representation of what a real player can do...like 4 tracks per player (1 for stacc...1 for others....which, as we all know, we're moving away from...as VI makes it possible...)

  • PS...viewing with instruments now...but regions still show untitled...still a pain...is there a VSL fix...I'll also be going to Apple.

  • Hi,
this is not a bug indeed.
You can name the track via shortcut.
(i assigned shift AND + to it, because i faced this problem too!)

Now you have a named instrument and with the shortcut it doesnt
    waste that much time.

  • HTF,

thanks for the shortcut...I'll be using it..of course, still wish there was another way around it...I know, everyone wants SOMETHING they can't have. [:)]

  • Hi,
I have noticed the same behaviour, when I load factory- or user- presets with in the VSI Plug: No corresponding tracknames are shown.

But if I recall user-presets from the window, which shows up first when you open the VSI plug-in in Logic (the one, that asks if you want to "show window" [;)] ), the presetnames are shown correctly as tracknames.

I saved my user-presets with the "save as"-dialog in the "Vienna Instruments AudioUnit-Server Interface"-window (you know, this little window, which asks if your really want to "show window" [;)] ) to the VSI folder inside Logic's plug in settings. Doing so, the prestes are saved with the extension ---.aupreset. Maybe this makes the difference, that Logic can recognize the names. But even then Logic will only show up the presetsnames as tracknames, when i recall the presets from this little window, which you all know.

    Best wishes,
    Hans
