  • Memory Problem?

    hi all,

yesterday i connected my apple G5 dual 1.8 Ghz with 2 GB ram and my MacBook Pro dual 1.8 Ghz with 2 GB ram over Midi Network and a digital cable.

my main G5 is the Master and the laptop is only be the one whos processing the Vienna Instruments (the whole Cube).

i have the samples installed on a 600 GB external harddrive and itĀ“s connected to the firewireport of the MacBook.

the G5 ist hosting Logic Pro 7.2.1 and the Macbook is hosting Logic Exprees 7.2.1.

both with the latest OS updates.10.4.6

    my Problem is:

i did a test-session an opened 16 VI on the MacBook in logic express.
i always used the "Learn" and "optimize" button for better memory performance.

after loading samples into 12 of the VIĀ“s with not more than 15 MB memory used per Instance (after optimizing) - thatĀ“s an overall Ram-Use of max. 180 MB, there where only 30 MB of free Ram left.

When i open Logic, with 16 Instances empty, without any samples, i have 1229 MB free.

and if i load 180 MB of samples into 12 VIĀ“s thereĀ“s only 30 MB left?

so where is the rest of my 950 MB of RAM?

i do not run any applications in background, or something like that.

    best,

    marfbeatz

  • any idea?

    thanks,

  • Have you tried runing "activity monitor" to see where the RAM is going?

    julian,

    thanks for your answer!

yes, my Activity Monitor shows me (when the project is opened), there are about 630 MB Physical Ram used by the VSL-Server, 85 MB Physical Ram by Logic Express, 19 MB Physical Ram by the finder, 10 MB by my Midi audio Network, 40 MB Physical Ram by Dashboard, 5 Mb Physical Ram by the dock,
and some very little apps (all togehter about 3 Mb)....

itĀ“s funny, after i Re-startet Logic express, itĀ“s seems that everythings fine. my free ram in the VI is about 800 MB....

do i have always to restart the Host to get my RAM free?

  • Sorry don't know the answer to that!

I'm sure if you post a question on the apple Logic Express forum someone will know.

    Julian

  • okay, thanks julian!

maybe iĀ“m wrong but i donĀ“t think that there are many express users with the vienna instruments there...
i only use it for hosting the VIĀ“s and controll them over OS-TigerĀ“s Midi Network over Ethernet.

maybe someone here has the same problem?or can someone give my a hint?

i just played the project from the start to the end, and after that my free memory went from 800 MB down to 350 MB...

isnĀ“t it right, that after pressing the learn button, and then the "optimize button", all the samples that are used for the project, are kept in the RAM, and the unsused oneĀ“s should be cleared from the memory?

why are my VI loading stuff to the RAM or using my free RAM after playback?

    best regards

  • I suppose it's possible that the VI is holding references to the previously-used RAM for the "reset" function to run as quickly as possible. It may be that once you try to access that RAM it will actually be freed and accessed by new samples, but until you do so, it shows up as wired (in top, that is). In other words, the VI is "telling" you the RAM is free, but it will only _actually_ be freed when you ask for it by loading more samples, otherwise the VI secretly keeps hold of it in case you hit "reset" in the memory manager.

Dunno. Kind of makes sense to me.

  • Actually, I've just been making some custom patches, and I've noticed a similar problem. Seems like it's a bug in the RAM usage monitor in the Perform window. I've been running through all my instrument, loading, customizing, saving, then dumping, but the memory report doesn't appear to be releasing the samples when I load a new instrument. Currently it shows 46 MB free! :-0

However, top gives a sensible reading of 273 MB used by the vsl-server, which is about right. So, it looks like the actual memory usage is fine, just the VIs report of it is a bit dodgy.
