  • Some very nice colors, a nice demonstration of brass articulations...Well done!

I noticed you emphasized the brass sounds much more over the piano accomp and rightly so, however I have a difficult time believing that they are in the same room, the piano's tone is nice and quiet but at the same time seems far away, however you could of wanted that to purposely hear the brass instrument more.

The piano seems a lot of programming....

  • Thanks for your comments, Guy.

How loud and how far away to make the piano is something I wrestled with quite a bit. I definitely wanted to make the brass the "star" but I probably erred too far in this direction. I also used Altiverb's stage positioning feature to push the piano behind the brass soloists-- again I probably went overboard. Finally the PMI Bos 290 piano was sampled with a fair amount of ambience "built-in" and so in fact is in a different space than the VSL instruments. I hope that VSL releases a classical piano recorded on their silent stage some day soon. The piano is such an important color to both orchestral and chamber music and would be a fabulous addition to the VSL library.

    Best,

  • After listening again, I think it has more to do with the lesser richness of the piano's tone compared to the VSL instruments, as a pianist you expect a certain presence according to various attacks, and that must of been where I was coming from. But at the same time I'm also being nitty picky.... [:D]

VSL! We need a piano lib. [8o|]

  • Small correction-- Blacher's Divertimento #2 features tenor trombone not trumpet. [[;)]]
