  • Fixing Legato Problems...Question

I am noticing that even when I think I'm playing legato, and in Logic the screen shows the notes touching and even overlapping a bit, the sound is still choppy. I have to go in and stretch each note to overlap MORE in order to achieve the proper legato sound. Since this is consistent in my playing, is there an adjustment...is it release?.....that I should permanently make to my patches that would insure that I don't have to go in and tweak all this constantly?

    Thanks for any advice

  • ...Perform tab... "play" with the "Rel" cursor... I think you should resolve...

    I hope so! [:)]

  • Tom, I think that we had this discussion back in the old days of the Pro Edition Performance Set (and for once were in total agreement!!!!!). I think that the legato is now much more consistent, but agree that sometimes one would like less of an abrupt change of note. In the real world not everyone would change the bow at the same time, so this would automatically occur. I think that the answer does lie in the release times. You can set this to a controller (I think) and then when the tempo warrants it just raise it slightly so that the notes have a more smooth transition.

However, just thinking about it, if you are playing legato and not getting the legato transition, then this means that the legato threshold is not correct for you. In GS3 (and the Performance Tool) one could change this, but as I previously asked it is not possible in VI. I hope that they change this at some point, as I also like such things to suit my playing, after all it has taken many years to develop my keyboard technique and I don' see that I should have to re-learn how to play at this stage of the game.

  • Tom,

I've noticed there can often be a uniform dip in legato transitions that, as you build up an orchestration, becomes more pronounced and leads to an artificial quality. With the solo legato instrument patches the problem is not there but for block chords it can be a problem. I have tried playing with the release times but this can often cause a ringing fx as you perceive a decay time.

An option i have found works is to either use legato patches on different tracks with all solo lines building up a chord structure (making sure tutti notes only appear on one midi track) or to duplicate midi chord tracks with different patches and manually change the start and end time of the notes so they are at different points.
