  • Vienna Instruments AudioUnit-Server Interface window

Do you think it will be possible in the future to get rid of the mini Vienna Instruments AudioUnit-Server Interface windows? In my current project, I have 20 of these things in random places all over my screen -- would love to find a way out of this situation. Could this be somehow built-in to the plug-in? Or maybe they could all be part of a single Vienna Instruments AudioUnit-Server Interface window, no matter how many VI's are instantiated, so we'd have just one to deal with. Thanks.

  • I use it in Logic and I just open one instance of the AU server window and use the selection box on the top of the window to switch between the Instrument track I need.

Not sure if it looks the same in other platforms.

  • Thanks Paul, that's right, same in DP, but the problem is that after use the selection box in the Server window to open a different VI, the AudioUnit Server window for the one you just opened will remain if you go on to open others. Before you know it, they are all open again.

  • Do you have a link button.....? In logic there is a toggle switch - it looks like a "purple chain" ( not to be confused with purple rain - which was a prince track!).

If I select this as I choose different instruments the AUServer simply changes to represent whichever instrument I selected - then I hit the show window button et voila....done.

(I would send you a jpeg but cannot seem to make the image insert work??)

Even without this link feature - if I simply choose the instrument with the selector within the AU server (in the centre at the top of the AUS unit) and NEVER hit on the actual "Vienna Instrument" in the Instrument channel the GUI changes to the one selected.....It really works but I don't understand how you keep ending up with "AUserver City!!"

tell me how to do images and i will spelll it out so you can see.....

  • Right, I've used Logic and understand the link button, unfortunately no such thing in DP. The problem I'm having is that no matter how you select the VI that you want with the server window, when you close that VI it will leave the server window behind, as a remnant. If anyone using DP has a different experience from this, let's hear it.

(I don't know how to attach images here either.)

  • OK Gary..... i get it...

I thought the issue you had was the fact that there were "20 open at time"....

You just dont want it there at all when you close the GUI....

Well - as I have 2 screens and have built screenset where I include the AU server window permanently on display - tucked it a corner on screen 2.....and it is always available but doesnt get in the way......not really a problem...BUT YES.... If there WAS a way to have it open like a normal plugin - i would like that too!!!

  • I do have 20 open at a time, I guess because the VI doesn't work as elegantly in DP as it does in Logic (according to what you're described).

  • Gary.....

what power is your G5 just out of interest and do you run all the verbs/outboard on the same computer......I am not getting a good instance count ( certainly not 20 ) and I have a 2.5 DP with 6.5 gig of ram - got all the settings tuned in - but she still don't want to play fair with me.....

  • Paul -- I have a G5 Quad, 8 GB ram. Seems crazy that with such fast computers we're only able to limited VI counts with Vienna. I still have to do most of my Vienna tracks with my Kontakt Opus versions because of this. With the new Kontakt version 2.1.1, I'm able to get even more tracks than I could before, further widening the gap between its performance and that of VSI. I like to do most of my work with a single Mac, and am tired of the 3 G5 method I used to use. I do still have 2 G5s, but I'm hoping Vienna optimizes their VI soon, so that we can get many more instances on a single Mac. I hope Vienna isn't relying on users putting various parts of the library on separate computers to get high track counts, and in the process putting any work on their part optimizing VSI's performance on the back burner.

(I run Altiverb on the same computer, a single instance for everything.)

Ok....The quad would explain the high instances to me....I know what you are saying about performance - and I am about to embark on the multiple G5 / PC route for my VI's ......so the question on my lips is - seeing as you have already been there - what is the biggest drawback about having 2 or 3 slaves.....for you...?

i am also waiting for the INTEL MACs before I jump I think.....if they are really blistering fast....then I think it is a no brainer.

  • I guess I'm just looking to simply things by using a single computer. Revisiting old projects done with 3 G5s is a nightmare, and just in general, I'm more comfortable with everything on a single computer. I only load the VI tracks I'm using for the particular cue I'm working on; I don't load a huge work template palette anymore (you know, with all manner of oboes, violins, etc). Certainly many people have multi-computer setups and they work great, I'm just more interested in the opposite direction.

  • I've been fooling with the AudioUnit Server window, and I guess I'd be happy if VSI's behavior was changed to be like the other VIs I have. When you switch to, say Kontakt or any other VI, they will display their interfaces. With VSI, there's the extra step with the Show Window button. If we could have VSI default to displaying its interface instead of the Show Windo button, much of this issue would be solved. Thanks.
