  • PC BOFFINS - Your Advice is needed!

    OK...

So here I am STILL pondering what to buy for my slave computers - G5's or PC's

I have some specs for a PC and was hoping someone with PC know how would let me know if it would work sufficiently enough to run Vstack with VI's / and or Giga Studio with my Pro Edition....

Here are the specs - but obviously I would have to up the HD capacity if I wanted both libraries onboard + a sound card (which would probably be a hammerfall of some description)

It is one of the shuttle

    Shuttle SS59G
    Onboard Graphics
    Intel Pentium4 3.0GHz 2MB cache socket 775
2GB PC3200 DDR RAM (this is the maximum it holds)
    80GB SATA 7200 HARD DISK - (Diamond max 10)
    250GB SATA 7200 / 16MB cache
    16x DVD RW
    5.1 channel sound
    10-100 network
Firewire & USB 2.0 on the front & back
    Keyboard & optical mouse
    Dimensions: 30 x 20 x 18.5 cm (LWH)

    £473 GBP

what do you think.....good or bad???

    thnx PaulM

  • First Study this thread, I dont know any better comment on Hardware questions.
    http://www.vsl.co.at/de-at/69/128/33.vsl

The Pricing is OK, but I think you'll better look for a more than 2 GB-RAM-Mainboard than for more HD-GB's and as far as I know, you presumably will need a Asio-Soundcard.

  • Thanks steffen - but this link just took me to the main forum page.....can you tell me the name of thread/date and where it is.....

    thnx PM

  • oops, try this one,

Its just the sticky Thread: "[PC] Memory configuration and VI..." if this link dont work either:

  • I am not going to comment too deeplycos I am no expert but looking at your spec I was wondering about having on board graphics - might be a problem - just a cheap graphics card - one that does not have a seperate power supply - £15 UK would be better, also when you say can only take 2 gig RAM well its also down to how many RAM slots - If you only have two slots then this would be a limitation, but if there are four using 512 each then you should go for two 1 gig Rams and leave the other slots for later upgrade. I havent used it, but apperently VI supports more than 2 gig, but other VST's may not - not sure about V stack.

Also, post in the Cubase Hardware forum - you will get answers from hardware genius's there.

I don't know enough about it to help very much, but you need 4GB RAM otherwise you are wasting a PC. If this computer doesn't have 4 slots (or is unable to take 1GB sticks) then you are better off finding one that does. Remember that the more PCs you get, the more soundcards that you need, which can considerably add to the cost. In any case, whatever you get, make sure that there is no cr*p loaded onto it. If necessary re-install Windows.
