  • Allowing Primary and Backup Licenses

I want to suggest a change in licensing that would be a great benefit to all VSL users. Currently, I have my VSI libraries spread out among several Macs and PCs. As I begin to get more familiar with the libraries (and based on the nature of the project on which I am working), I find myself having to transfer licenses between Synchrosoft (Vienna) Keys as I run out of memory on a machine. For example, for one string-heavy project, I filled up my memory on one PC with violins and violas and had to move cellos and basses to another PC. For the next, I needed to split up my brass. Moreover, licenses can only be divided in VSL's pre-defined units -- e.g. Violins and Violas can's be split onto two keys.

This problem could be easily solved by allowing a secondary license for each library. The secondary license could be moved to another key allowing much greater flexibility when working with the libraries. It seems a small thing to offer considering the expense of these libraries. If piracy was a concern, there could even be a test to ensure that a "primary" key existed for at least one library on each machine or by testing across the network to find a "primary" key. I'm sure there are other solutions that can work.

Anyone else have ideas on this topic?

  • at least in its current appearance the protection device cannot be detected across a network and there is no way to split licenses in other parts than the predefined ones (i've posted considerations about the pros and cons in another thread).
but of course one could imagine other solutions, please see my email
