  • make strings sound softer

    hey all..

upon the realease of the AV i have been spending some time on collecting ideas about how to make the already existing normal orchestra strings sound a little softer...

just tweaking the eq won't do it

does anyone have experience with any plugins or filter which applies well to the sound?

in general the vienna instruments are very clear, extense and dominant in a mix, and playing alltogether they easily take each others space... this might be the lag of a proper reverb with room placement

i've seen a brilliant tutorial by beat kaufmann about the eq.. is there more?

  • I am very new to VI, in fact I have only been working with Kotakt bundled VSL orchestra, but Like you I had trouble with section strings sounding too harsh, I found that loading the right reverb did a lot for the sound making it more mellow

  • Same here. I bought Solo Strings VI for a project where I needed to mockup a string quartet before live recording and I ended up using GPO and SI instead.
It was fun playing with individual instruments, but as soon as I started putting them together, the sound got unacceptable -- harsh, unpleasantly resonant and... out of tune (due to unstable pitch of sustain samples).
I haven't had that kind of problem with GPO solo strings, which sound perfectly in tune when put together.

So, any official tutorial on how are we supposed to use this library without hiring a mixing engineer would be appreciated.

  • with solo strings i cant second that.
especially with solo strings i find they're extremely beautiful and as dominant as a solo instrument should be to persist against the rest of the orchestra

  • I am not talking about solo strings in orchestral context, but a string quartet on its own, when there is nowhere to hide in a mix.

  • The solo strings worked well when I used them to perform my piece, THE AMAZING X RAY MACHINE. Any thoughts on this performance would be appreciated!
