SPEAKING of STRINGS

Thanks for the reply, Jaimo. I have Kontakt2 and Digital Performer. When you say to use controller 11, how do you go about activating it? In the mean time, I have found that by adjusting the release button in Kontakt a pleasing (at least to me) fade out is achieved. I would like to send along a short mp3 to illustrate this point and to see if you think it compares favorably with your use of controller 11 in your set-up, but I haven't figured out how to add mp3's to my Forum replies yet. If you know how this can be done, could you let me know, or could you drop me your email address, as it can be easily sent that way (I haven't been sucessful in sending mp3's as part of private message replies either). Thanks a lot for your help. Best, OJ

Hearing this mp3, I'm not quite sure I see the problem your having. Sounds pretty fine to me.

Whatever you do, as long as it gives the effect you are looking for, it is fine. In the real world this effect is not really possible, as at some point everyone has to stop the bow moving, but when it is travelling at speed it tends to just stop the sound a bit abruptly. It can be done, but it would be necessary to leave a slightly longer gap between chord changes in order to get a clean start on each one.

OJ,
Enabling controller #11 is done in the same place where you would edit MIDI data. Since I don't use Performer, I don't know exactly where that's done, but in most sequencers, there are windows where you can activate or view, and edit, any MIDI controller data.
For me, My CM8 controller keyboard has many sliders and knobs, so assigning controller #11 to a fader is quite easy, which allows me to write that information in realtime, as I play a part. I can then go back and edit it, if I need to be more precise.
For what it;s worth, expression data will allow you to achieve what your mp3's are showing, with the added benefit of not altering the release of the sample, because, as you know, there will be other times you want the strings to stop quickly, and not decay that much.

Thanks a lot for the replies-most helpful. Christian: the mp3 was done AFTER I found a possible solution by adjusting the release time knob in Kontakt. It sounds alright to me also-and I'm so glad you agree. I'm often insecure in what I think sounds good sample-wise. And Jaimo, you're right-there will be times when it would be desirable to have longer or shorter fadeouts, in which case making a one time adjustment to the release time knob in Kontakt wouldn't be appropriate. I'm checking about the controllers now. Thanks also to you, DG-a longer gap time between notes would enhance clarity. And you're absolutely right when you say that what works-works. There are various ways of going about this business of making samples sound realistic (or maybe "pleasing" whould be the better word). It seems like a vast Sargasso Sea to me sometimes, and right now, especially, in regard to the strings, it really seems like that. Looking at the Forum threads, I see that much comment is spent in complaining about the string samples, but I've also heard enough pleasing examples of VSL strings that I'm convinced that they can be done well. So I plod on asking questions. Does anyone agree that getting Orchestral Strings would be the best first step, financially and practically, to solving many of the problems in combining the various string articulations (such as being able to play legato, stacatto, heavy vibrato, no vibrato, etc-in other words, like a real violin) uninterrupedly on one track in one pass and in gracefully, as it were, moving into the new VSI (all I have at present are Opus 1 and Solo Strings)? By the way, your web site looks great MattDean. Thanks again for your help. It was much appreciated. It seems that at present the only way to get an mp3 on the Forum is by having a web site to send it from. Is there any other way that anyone might know about? Thx, OJ
