  • Loading times in MAc Quad 2.5 twice as fast?

    Hi you Quad owners,

with my G5 2Ghz DP loading times in VI are still a pain...
Besides the processing power, does the Quad load the VI really faster!, or is it only more! Instruments you can load?
And by the way: Dont´you all agree, that a loading status bar in a decent professional software would be nice, dear Golem-Wizzard (We love you!)?

    Revolution!!!

    Oliver

  • The quad does load a little faster than the 2.0. Where it really shines is in sheer computing power for multiple VI's with multi Altiverb 5's.It's probably 2-3 times or more better than the 2.0. Get at least 5 gig ram.

A loading bar is a great idea.

  • Thanx Bruce!

Any comment on the loading bar from the Vienna team?

    Best Regards

    Oliver

  • One more thing Bruce,

Do you run the Motu 424e PCI Express Card with your Quad?
Is it runnung well? I plan to buy one since my RME Card (which I was very happy with) doesn´t run on PCIe.

    Oliver

  • Hi Oliver, The only problem I had with the PCIe card was having to reboot on rare occasion that the G5/Motu Audio didn't see it for some unkown reason. Other than that there's been no problems with it.

Another thing about loading times; once you have a VI template at least in Digital Performer that initially takes 7 minutes to load.,after loading the same song approx. 10 or more times the loading time goes down to about 2-3 minutes. I guess OSX is doing something to the files to speed them up.

  • Thanks Bruce,

interesting information about the loading times!
It would be nice if the VI Server could detect formerly used Samples and keep them In RAM (like the EXS does) to load them faster, when you switch from Projekt to Projekt in Logic. (Can You hear me Herb?)

    Best Oliver

  • Hey all,

I've noticed within Logic that after I initially load a VI that subsequent loads are quicker (we all knew this I think) and that even if I quit logic and open again, the load times are much better. I believe this is because the VSL Server never stops running once you load a VI...that is, it runs until you either shut the computer down or force-quit the vsl Server and VSL Daemon. I think what takes the thing so long in the first place is location of the samples (I think the directory manager searches everything on its list) and verifying licenses with Syncrosoft. I believe it may have been posted in March that the Syncrosoft is the main reason behind slow initial load-times...but you'll have to get someone who realliy knows for sure to confirm ANY of what I just said.

PS..it's been a few weeks since I've used the VI, but as I recall, as you unload instruments, VI relinquishes the memory that was being used by that instrument...so leaving the server running doesn't kill one...I think.
