  • Middle C

    Hi Guys,

Is there any possibility of a Logic AU version of the Vienna Instruments that displays the Octaves as Logic does?. I have to play C5's to get a Vienna C6 and C0's to get a Vienna C1 (Logic, and all my other kit, is an octave adrift from all the VSL documentation and software read outs.

A VI that is to the same notation configuration as Logic would be really cool and stop endless confusion in articulation switches!

    Thanks

    Julian

  • What do you call middle C?

    D

  • All my other stuff Akai samples x4, Logic, etc has C3 as middle C.

Unfortunately that's actually not correct though (in Europe, at least), as Middle C is historically set at C4. I have been swearing for years about AKAI samples being at the wrong octave. However, it might be good to be able to set something somewhere so that your sequencer and samples can all agree on pitch naming.

  • I logic prefs you can change the display note from C3 to C4.

  • Thanks but then it's out with all the rest of my hardware.

Can't you use some sort of transpose on a track by track basis?

I think that the confusion started because computer engineers thought that the bottom C on a keyboard ought to be C0, rather than actually learning some basic music theory! If this was the case then it would meant the VI mapping for A/B patches would be in octave -1 [:D]

FWIW I believe that Cakewalk used to think that Middle C was C5, although that might have changed since I used any of their programs.

    Hi
You don't have this effect only with Logic. Unfortunately VI's C1 don't correspond with Cubase C1 too.
    VI C1 > Cubase C0
    VI C0 > Cubase C-1
    ...

The main issue is in the matrix pages when entering articulation notes and the note display being out an octave with the Vienna Instrument display. Transposing doesn't really help as it transposes the sounding notes as well. I'm sure it's possible to do various work rounds (the closest being changing Logic to think C4 is middle C but this just pushes the discrepancy over to another device!
