Thanks to your pointers DG I know how to control the Xfader but assigning a controller and embedding midi instructions in sibelius to move the xfader is not the same as switching it on and off. To switch the xfader on and off you click on the button in the VI.
The point may be mute as it may not be important with sibelius to switch it on and off but in the tutorial the xfader is switched off for short notes and switched on for long notes so I wanted to know the midi instruction for switching it on and off.
