  • Addressing 8gig of RAM using 2 G5s for Vienna Instruments..

    Hi all,

I am trying to setup 2 G5 computers to adress 8 gig RAM worth of Vienna Instruments.

    The plan:

    1) Setup 2nd G5 (slave) to recieve MIDI using ethernet (done it works using Audio/Midi setup)

    2) Setup 2nd G5 (slave) to pipe Audio into Host G5 via lightpipe to my Metric Halo (done it works)

Problems: On the Slave G5 I launch Vienna Instruments stand-alone and give it a midi channel...that worx BUT i can only initiate 1 instance of VI in stand-alone mode. I need to to initiate at least 8 instances, meaning that I need a Host DAW on the slave machine......Enter Logic7...BUT the L7 and VI dongles are already being used by the main G5.....how do I get around this?

    To be more clear:

My main G5 will be running Logic 7, as soon as I run out of RAM on that G5, I wish to load more instances of Vienna on the 2nd G5 (slave)...

    please help...

PS: sorry for posting twice, but the subject heading in my other post was wrong[;)]

    Thanx,

  • You don't need anything as fancy as Logic as an AU host. The cheapest one is AU Lab, part of the developer's tools that come with your Mac. I don't kow how well it works. Garage Band also hosts AUs, but I've never tried it with anything serious. Or you could just buy a copy of Logic Express.

Steinberg V-Stack (I think it supports AU as well as VST), Plogue Bidule, and plasq RAX are others. Native Instrruments KORE looks interesting, altthough it's more expensive than the others.

  • Logic Express does not work. I had a lot of trouble with it. Au lab is also no good, it keeps 'forgetting' its set up. I now use Plogue Bidule, which is cheap (70 euro) and works.

  • NICK......

    eureka!!!!!!!

    AU LAB worx GREAT [;)]

something occured to me....you know how Logic7 has that 3-4 gig RAM max out?

    Well,

does it not stand to reason that AU Lab as it is part of the DEV tools IS a 64Bit app?
Meaning that it CAN adress 8 gig of RAM?

    or am I kidding myself?

  • Gerard,,,

Does Plogue support 64 bit addressing ....so I can use the full 8 gig of RAM in my 2nd G5?

    SvK

  • it was explained to me that no program that uses the graphic interface - meaning no program that isn't Unix text-based, i.e. no program that we'll ever use - has 64-bit addressing. Only Terminal programs can be 64-bit.

Actually, it's supposed to be possible to program hybrids, but nobody has done that yet (as far as I know).

  • I've been using Plogue on a PC and it works great. At some point I'll run it on a second G5 to host more VI's.

  • Nick....

I bought plogue and it occurred to me that since Logic has a 4 gig RAM limit...

So does plogue .......Soif I run plogue and Logic on my main machine, each program can run circa 4 gig of VIs, so on one machine I can utilise 8 gigs worth right?

    SvK

  • There is currently no way (so far I know) to address more than 4GB RAM in Panther or Tiger. The limit will fall probably with Leopard the same applies I guess with Windows Vista. Well in the meantime you have to work with 4GB inside of an application (that's why the made the VI server AU stuff I guess again [H] ?!)

    best, imusic

  • Imusic...

That is my point since within Logic it is 4 gig...

Shouldn't there be another 4 gig for Plogue Bid?

    SvK

  • Yes, each program has 4GB (3GB or so in the real world). The question is whether the system will be stable running that way.

  • Well....

I will let you know in some hours....loading up massive amounts of RAM now [;)]

    BUT check my other post..

I only need 1 program (L7) to access the 8 gig as long as 4 gig are Vienna Instruments and the other 4 are exs24 Vienna [;)]

VSL Server has it's own memory it does not load into memory of Logic...

I think this will work...If it does I will have great use for all the old EXS vienna stuff.

  • If i weren't having horrendous problems getting an external SATA drive I'm installing to work, I'd be able to see for myself...

  • How does one obtain AU Lab?

  • I thought I'd just post that I use Rax for hosting VSL VI's. it's quite flexible.
I route midi via IACBUS, and run Rax at 250 samples audio buffer.

So I can switch from one Logic song to another without having to wait ages for samples to load..

I posted a very long post on Sonikmatter.
