  • Multiple G5s for more VI instances...does each need midi?

    Hi,

I am hitting my RAM ceiling using 1 G5 and Logic7..

I want to run multiple G5s .....Brass on 1 , Strings on other etc....

Does this mean that each G5 needs a MIdi in/out card?
Does this mean that each G5 needs it's own Audio i/0?

And what about the Dongles? Will I need a dongle for each G5 running VIs?

Can I use LAN for midi ?

please post step by step procedure....thanx

  • Vagn....

You're link doesn't work...it goes to forum topics

  • Network MIDI is built into OS X 10.4, so if all your G5s are running Panther you're all set. I use MIDI Over LAN (www.musiclab.com) because it's cross-platform.

Also, I haven't figured out a way to get Network MIDI to address more than 16 channels per machine, but that may just be something I don't quite get.

  • Nick....

    I had no idea...that is great [;)]

  • Sooo...

Does every G5 need it's own display? or can I run all of the G5 from 1 set of displays/keyboard/mouse?

    SvK

  • Ah sry Svon. [:D]

Check a thread further down in the topic list called "Nick Batzdorf and Vagn - RE: 2 Macs" where we are having a discussion on this very subject.

And fyi, I have a samsung TFT display which have both analog and DVI input, so I connect both Macs to it and switch between them by pressing the "source" button on the front of the display. This will switch between the inputs, and alas, the 2 Mac desktops. Handy.

I have seperate Keyboard+mouse beside my main one.

And yes, use Tiger's built in midi over network functions if u are going to use Macs only for the setup.

  • Got it

    Thanx....

    What about dongles?

Do I need to buy a 2nd snycrocrap dongle?

    SvK

  • So it seems I can buy "Apple Remote Desktop" for 299.00$ (shouldn't that be free?)

And then I can run up to 10 macs from 1 computer's display/keyboard/mouse...

    SvK

  • OK......

I've got my 2nd G5 hooked up over ethernet recieving MIDI via audio/midi setup using ethernet cable....kewl [;)]

    next:

Goal is to use the 4 gig of RAM on the slave to run more instances of Vienna Instruments...

Now if I launch standalone VI on slave machine.....that only gives me one instance of VI....I need like 8 to 16 instances, each with their own respective midi channel...

Remember ...I wish to sequence the music with Logic 7.2 on main G5 ONLY!

    so what are my options?

Not to mention the dongle problem....HELP

    SvK

  • I guess I could use Garage band to initiate multiple instances of Vienna Instruments on the slave G5 right?

Which would be piped into Logic on main Machine where I sequence?

    SvK

    (seems hoaky though)

  • Actually,

Best option would be for Herb and Co to update Stand-Alone version of VI to have a "rack" mode, in which one could open multiple instances of VIs with a respective Midi Channel for each VI.....this would elliminate the need for a 2nd host for the slave machine.

    Thoughts?

    SvK

  • Actually,

    It almost already exists:

When in "matrix assign mode", on the left you can assign each matrix a key-switch (midi-note) Now, if we had a 2nd mode where instead of inputing a midi-note into that field it could be a midi-channel..voila [;)]

    Thoughts?

    SvK

  • But VI would still "switch" to the other matrix...instead of being able to have both simultaneously...Am I making any sense?

TRYING to break into the 8 gig orchestra....without a need for 2nd host on slave!
