    Hi there,

    I was thinking to give the VI Chamber strings a try, but I'm hesitating.
    I already own the Horizon Chamber Strings for Giga, and (to me) a few very important expressions are missing in that set:

    Single notes sustained non vibrato
    Single notes sul ponticelli
    Singe notes flautando
    And of course many modern expressions.
    More experimental, more wild & weird "FX-sets" would be welcome!

    But I figured, hey, there's twice as much content now on the VI, so let's check what they've added already!

    So I looked at the articulations list, but to be honest... what I hoped for was not there in the Extended Content.

    Also, in the "Exisiting content" colums I find:

    "Single notes: Sustained with and without vibrato"

    Well, in my Horizon set there's no sustains without vibrato, unless I'm really blind?
    Just in this case, I actually hope so[:)]

    So my questions are: is there this time Really a non-vibrato included in the VI Chamber Strings?

    Also: will there be updates soon with new expressions like sul ponti, flautando, and a few more modern expressions?

    Although the content and quality of what you DO give is really outstanding, I find it's a pity there's so little "thriller & horror" -content in the vienna series. After all, if you score for a film, or a computergame, you need more extreme expressions!

    I wish to use the Chamber Strings for an upcoming album which will require many eerie and scary atmospheres, and as one can of course do really scary things with a real chamber ensemble... I wondered if the VI chamber Strings and near future updates will be forfilling my needs.

    Yes there is. There is also a sustained-progressive vibrato patch.

    The rest you mention still aren't there.

    I'm also curious about if we can expect patch upgrades, and FX - VSL needs FX [:)]

    Hmm... the more I look into the Chamber Strings, the more I find missing:

    The violin section is rather expansive, but why are the Violas more
    limited?
    I have no patches for:

    Modwheel blend
    Combinations,
    Velo-blend
    Key-switch velocity

    And the same with cellos:

    No Modwheel blends between several dynamic layers, and I really use that
    a lot!

    And there appears only to be a looped version of Cellos Sustained?
    Unfortunately, many of the loops are not good.

    Then the Basses: they are much more complete again, hooray!
    But why not the Violas & Celli?
    Also the loops of the KB2L_sus are no good, unfortunately.
    And the playing is very irregular.
    In practice this means I can not use the Chamber basses for my very first opening of my score, which involves low sustained lines, almost like drones.
    Pity. Of course I can go for the full basses, but that would break the consistency of the concept.

    Well, so much for my remarks and concerns.
    Before I upgrade to the VI, I'd really love to know whether these
    issues have been improved.

    Perhaps one of the "insiders" can help me out?

    All VI instruments do have te same features, because this features are part of the VI player itself.

    Modwheel blend: is done with the Cell FX.
    Combine any patches of your choice at the patch assign page for crossfading.

    Combinations: Combine any patches of your choice with any controller of your choice or use any pre configured matrix files

    Velo-blend: this is done with the Vel XF, switch this function On/Off whenever you want with the Velocity X-Fade switch.
    Keyswicth velocity: look at all the Keyswitch Velocity matrix files

    Okay, I understand: all these blends & k-switch and so on patches are no longer issues, as the matrixed system of the VI allows to easily do that.
    Cool!

    But now that I've "got" you for a moment, I'm very curious about this:

    Will the following (and perhaps other) expressions be added to the chamber strings as updates?
    (I really miss them, regardless of the beauty of what you've already provided)

    - con sordino
    - sul ponticelli
    - flautando
    - additional contemporary FX (sooo needed for modern scores,not to mention film-and gamesoundtracks!)

    Are these the same samples from the Horizon Giga-set?

    sordino, flautando are only availiable for our orchestral strings
    ponticello for orchestra and solo strings

    no fx stuff planned at the moment, to many other things are planned or even in production

    there are new nonvibrato sustains for all chamber sections

    the vibrato sustains are the same you find in the Horizon Chamber Stings

    Herb... you gotta get a hold of Ligeti before he dies. Pay him whatever he wants, and have him direct the FX [:)]

    I actually think FX would be a quite succesful collection - even for non-VSL addicts

    Truly so. And actually... these days you can't do without. Unless you only
    remake strictly classical music. But if you want to impress producers (films games & other media) you need more than just the standard expressions.
    At the time, Peter Siedlazceck offered FX for all his instruments, I've used them A LOT. Together with "Classical Wild Takes", which is also pretty cool.

    But I've exposed them enough now, so I definitely would cheer (and get my wallet out) at the release of a "Vienna Orchestral FX" set, or "Vienna Contemporary Orchestra" or whatever you'd like to call it. [H]
