    Hey there... ive been reading a bit here and there, and am a little confused about what to purchase. I do some movie scoring, with some not too hot programs, and now im going to take the step...

    so what would I be getting.. Orchestra Cube or Performance Set, and why? What I really want is something which is as true to an orchestra as possible

    I also see there is a new version comming up, will this be worth waiting for considering that I have no experience with any of these products here...

    All the sales info about the VSL packages are at the links below. The first is for the Cube and Performances, then individual packages, then the Pro Edition.

    If you purchase the whole first edition now (Cube and Performances) you can update to the Pro Edition via the VIP plan and save a bit of money. Most of the folks who have ordered from us are film/tv composers, and overall, the experience has been to buy both. With the Performances, the favorite tool is the Legato mode, and the legato instruments are only in the Performances.

    Having created an ongoing series of proprietary training guides starting with the Cube, I think you need it for the basics, to be the core of your orchestra. I would classify the cube as the basic sample library and the Performances as the goodies, the extras because except for legato mode, which only requires about 5 minutes of training, everything else in the Performances, notably the repetitions, takes more time to learn how to use if you're under a serious deadline.

    Overall, I find the entire package an awesome tool, the likes of which has never been seen before. If you look to see what's new on the Pro Edition, you'll see it's like adding a third layer to a two-layer cake (German Dutch Chocolate, of course!).

    Hello Patriarch,

    we'll provide answers to all FAQ with the relauch of our website coming very soon. In the meantime, I'll try to give you a short description of our products available - the First Edition.
    (The Pro Edition which will be released in July will contain about double the data size of the First Edition [:D] )

    FIRST EDITION
    consists of Orchestral Cube (containing Strings, Brass&Woodwinds and Percussion, which you can purchase seperately) and Performance Set.

    The Orchestral Cube contains 45 gigs of orchestral multisamples:
    single note samples in various lengths and dynamics (from staccato to
    sus, from pp to ff), diminuendo, crescendo, sforzando, trills,
    tremolos, pizzicatos etc.

    The Performance Set contains 48 gigs of specialized samples that you
    perform from the keyboard or place in your sequencer, using our "Performance Tool". This offers you completely authentic legato playing or repetitions.
    When you play your personal melody, what you'll hear is natural legato
    (cause you always reproduce originally recorded intervals with starting
    note, target note PLUS the natural transition between them!) in the
    tempo and agogics you choose. The same with repetitions - you'll never
    get the same sample twice and therefore avoid the infamous "machine gun" effect.

    The concept of the Performance Set samples is completely new and innovative. It gives you the possibility to achieve completely authentic results for the first time, for it overcomes the difficulities of producing legato and repetiton sounds - which was the the Achilles heel of sampling until now.
    Ideally you should combine Orchestral Cube and Performance Set in your work, because all Vienna Symphonic Library samples were recorded under the same circumstances in the same environment - our "Silent Stage".

    what are the system specs required to play a complex song...?

    Oh... and the performance set.. does that include samples of its own? if yes, do I need the orchestra cube?

    1. Yes, they're all samples.
    2. The system specs vary, but the VSL setup we have for Giga 2.5 is a P4 2.4GHz, 1.25GB of RAM, 40GB C drive, 240GB D drive., audio card, MIDI interface and Firewire card, CD_RW and DVD ROM.

    Typically, one to two systems are used for VSL.

    I don't know what a "complex" song means, so I suggest you listen to the many user demos on the site as many of these are quite rich and detailed.
