  • MIR - am I ready?

    Ok - I know Dietz wants tostrangle me for all these MIR questions but what can I say - I need to know [:D]

    Ok. Looking for alternatives to MIR (permanent or temporary) I have come accross a problem. The way I'm setup each slave has different instrumements installed. A simplified example

    Main DAW= Cubase
    slave1= Strings
    slave2= Woods
    slave3= Brass
    slave4= Percussion

    Now what I really want is for my instruments to be placed in a virtual hall. The audio input of each slave is compliled into a sigle signal routed back to my main daw. So once the audio enters I cant split it up again. Therefore I need the instrument placement to happen within each slave... This can be done by having the verb installed on each slave, but it cant be done by just having one install on the main DAW. So my question is:

    How would this setup work in a MIR enviroment - would I have the sample problem? If I have the same problem, how do I set up my work enviroment to sort this out?

    Also what non-MIR solutions are there? Meaning if I go with having a single copy of Altiverb on my main daw then how do I set thinsg up so I can give each instrument its own room placement?

    Thanks

    We must stop meeting like this [:D]

    My take is that you have two options:

    1) You bounce all tracks to audio on the DAW and then use your copy of Altiverb here, using instrument placing for each instrument and then the tail as they suggest.

    2) You pan the audio in your VST host on the slaves, bounce the whole signal to audio and use the instrument placement for depth, not width, and then add the tail....!

  • a) would be too slow a process - I was thanking god and the holy spirit when I finaly was setup so I only had to bounce once and a track was done [:D]

    b) Not "real" enough [:)] Too much of a compromise.

    Looks like you'll have to get your wallet out then [:(]

  • Or go with a cheaper solution than AltiVerb ... Pristine Space or Wizoo maybe

    Stil wondering how MIR would fit into such a setup [*-)]:

    I think that the two selling points for AV are the placement feature and the IRs. One of the reasons that I never used Gigapulse was that I didn't like any of the IRs. Some people swear by Wizoo, but I've never worked with it. However, most of my engineer friends use AV (on a Mac obviously) and I think that it sounds great, but I'm sure that a large part of that is the IRs.

    Indeed - it really looks great. But I find the price of $600 to be ok, if a tad expenssive. But getting 6 copies so I can install one on each machine is out of the question unfortunately.

  • Christain,

    thanks for your interest.

    If you check the information I presented on these boards you will understand that the MIR has to be considered as a complete mixing frontend, not just a more complex reverb. You put all your Vienna Instruments on a virtual stage and act like a conductor.

    The setup you described in your inital message would need a dedicated machine for the MIR to work properly. The specifications for this machine will be tighter as usual as the MIR-engine will tax its computation-power to the max. The details will be announced as soon as we know for _certain_ that commercially available hardware is ready for the task.

    HTH,

  • Ok - but are you telling me that its possible to setup each instrument on a virtual stage with me specific setup? (as long as I have a dedicated machine)

    Can you say how this would be possible?

  • Yes, as long as your machines meet the specs (which are modest in regard of MIR, at least insofar the VI-"slaves" are concerned).

    Our solution should allow the connection from up to 64 individual VIs directly into the MIR, from at least four, but most likely up to 64 slave machines. - Please be aware that this is _preliminary_ infomation and could change until the first public release of the MIR.

    HTH,

  • Interesting. So each slave sends some kind of (non audio) signal to the dedicated MIR which then sends out an audio signal?

  • You send back data to your DAW, or audio from the hardware attached to the MIR (according to our specs), yes.

  • Over an analog or digital audio cable, right? Not a network (unless you set up FX Teleport)?

  • Details tba. soon - watch this space [:)]

    I'm glad that you're going to make an announcement, as the suspense is killing Christian [:D]

    I'm only interested to know whether or not it works over a network as I'm not intending to buy any more "real"gear until I update to Vista (eventually).

    Indeed [:D]

    Bring it on Dietz!

    [Edit] Btw Dietz - Is it the same space where the old MIR demo video will be posted? [;)]
