Without putting a damper on VI and all the wonderful things it does, I still fail be able to create expressive and beautiful celli (section) lines in VSL. The celli always sound like they are too harsh and emotionless. I am talking mainly here of the legato articulations.
What is needed is the same thing that is being addressed with the upcoming expressivo violins. I find the vibratos in the VCs so subtle for instance, that I often have to check to make sure I haven't loaded a NV version.
I think they suffer, in general, from the same kind of dry, clinical sound that the violins have presented. This sound is perhaps fine for some things, but more often than not, the lack of expression and the often awkward sounds I get when doing celli causes me to sneak in another patch from various other libraries just to smooth things out.
I say all of this with the greatest admiration for what Herb and company have done, knowing that it can be so much better. You won't here a peep out of me, for instance, about the woodwinds[;)]
Thanks for allowing this view to be expressed.
