  • Real/Virtual Memory - VI on G5

Doing my first tests as far as how many samples I can load. What shows in the VSL SERVER activity monitor is that once I hit 1 gig loaded into REAL MEMORY everything I load beyond that shows increasing in VIRTUAL MEMORY with the real staying at 1 gig.

Is this normal? I have 4.5 gigs of ram installed. I expected the real memory would keep showing the ram usage going up at least well past 1 gig. Digital Performer shows 252 MB of REAL and 852 of VIRTUAL so I'm not really sure of the ramifications (slight pun intended) of all this.

    Thanks,

    DC

  • Just curious, Dave:

How much RAM is showing for OSX?
Are you running any plugins concurrently?

It was said that amounts of "header info" would be loaded only as needed from the new audio format-- notice that we have '.dat' instead of '.wav'. Not totally sure how this works---

But, as long as you can still load more instances (24 was it in the Mac tests?) without the Mac choking on you, then my guess would be that virtual memory is working to conserve resources. I have no idea how the remaining 3.5 GB would be used.

Any appreciable decline in performance with 1 GB + VM loaded?

  • JWL, thanks for responding. Mainly what I did was start loading it up and auditioning a lot of things so I really didn't put any stress on the system (no midi tracks/streaming going on) or load a lot of instances. Just filled 2 instances to see what would show in the monitor. It bothered me to see the actual real ram stop loading at 1 gig and virtual starting to take over because my understanding is performance is hamperd by virtual memory.

I'm planning on running all my strings in the G5 so I will be pushing it I'm sure. Just trying to find out if I'm already looking at a red flag or just not understanding OSX. The system wasn't using more ram than expected btw but I don't recall. I will check tomorrow for an exact figure. Also no plugins at all running.
