  • Question for Mac users

A friend of mine uses Cubase on a Mac (for some reason!!). He is interested in the Vienna VI but seems to think that Cubase doesn't use AU and there is no Mac VST version. Is there any truth in any of this? I just looked at the Nuendo (cross-platform) manual and couldn't find any reference to AU.

  • Hi DG,
your friend is correct. There is no Mac VST Version and Cubase does not support AU....so Cubase on a mac would not be able to run the VI.

    All best,
    -Ron

  • With that in mind, how hard could it be to port the PC VI VST to a MAC VI VST - especially an intel based mac?

Hm, neither with Nuendo then. I wonder what Dietz thinks about this [[:|]]
Hopefully when MacIntel is a reality it will be easier to port the PC VST to MAC and VSL will see the folly of their ways [8-)]

Eeeeeeeek; I should have read this post as well; sorry [:O]ops:

  • Or Steinberg/Yamaha will see the folly of theirs for not supporting AU like everything else does? [:)]

I didn't know that ProTools used AU as well, I thought that it was RTAS (or something along those lines)?

    DG

  • No, Pro Tools uses VST. Cubase uses RTAS, and Logic uses MAS.

Actually, Pro Tools uses, and invented, RTAS.

You can use VST with Pro Tools only by using a third party wrapper for another 100 or so bucks[;)]

  • So (apart from his joke) Nick is wrong? Everything doesn't support AU?

My theory is that Apple will do everything it can to get Steinberg off the Mac platform in order to clear the way for Logic. Unfortunately I don't think that this will help, as I don't see people abandoning Cubase in droves just to stay with Mac, particularly as the hardware is becoming so generic.

I just think that it is a shame that Cubase/Nuendo users will no longer have a choice of platform if they want to use a high end library like Vienna VSL.

  • OK, we are going to look at this, when it is released, if it works, yada yada yada.......

  • As far as I know the VST Wrapper is out, DG, but I haven't heard of anything that goes AU-> VST or AU-> RTAS. VST -> RTAS or AU isn't a problem, in fact I believe FXPansion has both.

Excellent; this could be just the ticket.

  • Might want to look at this...

    http://www.native-instruments.com/index.php?id=koredetails_us

It'll wrap both VSTs and AUs at the same time and allow you to port a whole rack of plug-ins between sequencers - but more than that.

No idea how much this is going to cost but it's due for release at Frankfurt Musikmesse I believe.

  • Looks interesting. It sort of gives me an idea for VI, but I'll start another thread!

I've been using this programme for a couple of years but you do need to start with a VST for Mac plug-in rather than a VST for PC. VI's are only VST for PC.

    Julian.

  • We were hoping to go the other way; AU to VST Mac.

    DG

  • It's possible that NI Kore will do that, DG, since it can work as a plug-in as well as a host.

  • NI Kore? Sorry, but I would love to have a useable, workable solution for VST Mac.
(As a NI K2, B4 and FM7 user. hehe, on Mac, hehe, waiting for bug fixes and error-free implementation of the features since - well, years, hehe, could think of something more, well, useful, even burning my money would at least produce heat, not too much, but at least,...)

Sorry, but as always - there is only one solution to get it right - make a VST VI - I think VSL is known to provide quality - not junk, so I think any wrapper that is not especially made for VI will not fit to that.

I would appreciate if VSL re-thinks their VST-Mac policy.

OK I've just been told that this wrapper won't work in Cubase or Nuendo because Steinberg doesn't support CA.
