  • VI Direectory Manager?

    Sorry to be a nuisance--

I've installed Chamber Strings with great success!

I continued with installing Orchestral Strings 1 & 2. After installation, I ran Directory Manager and all files for Chamber Strings and Orchestral Strings 1 & 2 appear. I clicked rescan, and the rescan button dissappeared immediately.

Is that supposed to happen? Or should the rescan take a little more time?

I ask because none of the Orchestral Strings appear in the VI console. Only the Chamber Strings appear. This happens when I load a VI in my DAW or when I load VI as Standalone.

FWIW, here is my directory hierarchy:
    HD > Vienna Instruments

Inside the Vienna Instruments Folder all the folders for Chamber Strings and Orchestral Strings 1 & 2 appear, as seen by Directory Manager.

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

    Thanks,
    JWL

  • JWL,

In Directory Manager, please try to remove and then manually add again all folders from the Orchestral Strings. No need to hit rescan, simply press "close"

Do the Orchestral Strings appear now?

    Best, Marnix

  • Hi Marnix:

I had just discovered this by accident before logging on. It was totally unexpected. I do appreciate your response. Now, both Chamber and Orchestral Strings 1 & 2 appear in the VI Console.

Please tell me (for my own sanity)-- was the Directory Manager intended to work this way, or did I do something wrong? This seems like an unusual method that was not mentioned in the instructions.

I have one other rather silly question:

The "patch" is the smallest component of the library-- several patches are used to build the matrices. There are some patches marked "cresc/dim" with no control features assigned. I am hearing the crescendo, but I can not figure out how to hear the diminuendo, even when I try to assign a control or keyswitch. Please tell me what I'm missing...?

This collection really feels very different from the PE in the way it's organized in the VI console. I am truly amazed so far at the potential for MUCH faster work. Part of it has to do with the fact that I'm no longer bound to EXS. What a tremendous relief!!

However, the VSL team ought to receive a tech award for this accomplishment. The most difficult part has been the installation, but after that is completed, the GUI is quite clever and very well thought out, really. Congratulations--!!

  • Hi JWL,

if you build a matrix of your own with cresc/dim or up/down movements, you have to activate AB switching on the control edit page. (AB switching is built into the patches.) This is set to keyswitching by default, but you can assign other controllers too - a sustain pedal could be a good choice.

Thanks, Dave. I "thought" I had done that once or twice to no effect, but since a number of things have been acting strangely with the installation I'm still beating myself up for the mishaps-!! [:D]

    I'll give this another try.
