Hi Mike,
please go to "settings", as described on page 7 of the Vi manual and choose your settings for the standalone VI. The virtual keyboard in the VI works when you loaded a patch. You see MIDI coming in when the keys "move". The standalone VI doesn´t need MIDI channels, it takes all the MIDI it gets from one port.
You may have solved it by now... still hope that helps.
