  • Splitting Instrument License across computers

Just received my VI. Sounds great! The abilities of the player to load so much more into the computer just made the value of my "Giga" boxes jump up tremendously. Also, the speed at which the Instrument plugin has allowed me to write compared to the "old" library has made my heart jump!

    Now for the issue[:)]

I spoke with Christian at the NAMM show in Jan. and had some very specific questions about how the licensing would work. My main concern was being able to spread libraries across computers so that I could continue with my setup of being able to have a full orchestral template up and ready to play live so I don't have to take time to load instruments or articulations when I need them. My question to Christian was whether or not the individual libraries (ie: chamber strings) could be distributed across computers. His answer was "certainly".

My mind was put at ease and I shelled out the big ones for the full expanded edition. Last night after loading up Chamber Strings, I was trying to figure out a way to split the license so I can put the violins/violas on one PC and the celli/basses
on another but had no luck.

Either Christian misunderstood my question, or I'm not figuring out a probably simple method of doing this. I can't believe that the entire Chamber Strings library would be relegated to one computer only. There's no possible way of loading a full L2 section in one PC.

Anyone with more enlightenment than I please shout out!

    Thanks so much!

  • Hopefully someone official will step in and correct me, but here is the wisdom as I understand it:

You can load different Collections on different PCs. Chamber Strings is one Collection, so it must reside on a single PC.

When I look at the licences for my Cube, there is only one per Collection (although the "additional" Extended versions are per instrument), so therefore it must reside on a single dongle.

Do give a shout if you want some help getting it all going on 1 PC and I'm sure someone will be able to help you.

  • Hello,

DG is correct. Sorry, Patrick, that must have been a misunderstanding at the NAMM show...

  • This puts a real cloud on the whole thing.

If I load all L1 patches I can get a full collection loaded up on 1 PC (Woodwinds 1 is an exception), but if I want to use the AWSOME L2 patches which have the universal instrument, there's no way to load up all of chamber strings or WW1.

If there is a way to do this that I'm missing, please let me know. I have 2GB of RAM in all my boxes. I can add more if necessary, but as I understand it, that won't help.

If each library is required to live on 1 PC, I'm a little confused at the choice of library splits. Example: Orchestral Strings are split between 2 libraries (vi/va and vc/cb) making them just the right size to load the (again AWESOME) L2 patches on 1 PC respectilvely. Why wasn't this done with Chamber Strings? The library loading requirements are essentially the same. The sound is different, but obviously the sample count is similar.

And that's only for the string libraries with 4 voices vi/va/vc/cb . This really becomes a problem with the WW and I'm sure the upcoming Brass.

The library and the implemntation of the virtual instrument interface is so well done. It's a horrible shame that we've had an artificial limit imposed as to how to allocate resources when dealing with hardware limitations.

Makes me wish I'd bought all Macs :/ At least then I could get 3.5GB loaded instead of 1.5.

I know you have to protect your product, but if there was any way to implement the ability to split libraries across computers, please make this possible.

Otherwise, thanks for all the hard work!

  • maybe you could buy another copy of chamber strings. IF you're rich.

  • lol, looks like that's the only solution for now.

Unfortunately, it looks like I would have to buy extra copies of Chamber Strings, WW1, WW2, Brass1, and Brass2 to be able have an orchestral template up ready to play.

A little too rich for my blood.

    Another Idea---
how hard would it be for you guys (VSL) to compile a 64 bit version of the interface. All my hardware is 64 bit ready, I can get 64 bit drivers for my audio card. I could use Sonar 64bit as a host, and could get the XP x64 bit OS (3 month trial version right now) till Vista comes out.

That way I could max out RAM in a single machine. Right?

    Any comments on this?
