  • VI not recognising patches

Well I thought I had it working in stand alone, but now I'm getting messages saying that one or other device is not recognised and I should click 'ok' to abort.
Basically, both in standalone and in Logic as an AU when I click on 'Patch Assign', I don't see any patches available in the list, yet I have them installed and they were working yesterday evening (at least in standalone mode).

In 'Matirx Assign', only a file named 'A/-Strings MATRIX - Files' is offering me any possibility of expanding which filters down to 'Orchestra Strings - Combi' but fails to load any samples when double clicked while on 'Preset Select' I can only expand down to a file entitled 'Orcestra Strings VSL preset' which also does nothing when clicked on.

I'm feeling very confused - can any one help? [*-)] Now it's not even working in standalone mode - just bouncing in my dock and not opening. HELP!

(Also, apologies the screen shots didn't get through - if anyone knows how to post these, could you let me know please, presuming we're allowed to)

Just so you know, I'm running OSX.4.5 on a dual G5 with 7 gig RAM and have installed all the VI info on an external 1 terabyte drive connected by Firewire 800.

    Thank you,

    Nick [*-)]:

  • Hi Nick,

My first assumption if the application does not start at all is that either your Vienna Key could not be properly plugged in or that you perhaps try to launch the VI from a partition where the License Control Center is not installed on.

Please put the Vienna Key in another USB plug - does that make any difference?

If you launch the License Control Center, is your Vienna Key recognized?

Also, please check your permissions on the harddrive(s) containing your VI content - these sometimes become scrambled for no apparent reason.

And finally, please try to open the Vienna Instruments Directory Manager and remove, then add again, all your folders containing the .dat files from your Vienna Instruments.

By the way, which version of the VI do you use? There are already updates available in the Download section of our website!

Please let me know wether this helped you solve the problem!

  • Hi Marnix,

Tried all of your suggestions, and only have one USB port spare that I can use which is the one on the front of the tower. I had tried it at the back of my keyboard, but there wasn't enough power. Then I tried it on a 4 way hub at the front of the tower, and finally I removed the hub and now swap them when I need to print things, so it's directly into the computer. It had originally worked in this one, but now I'm still getting a 'Solo string - viola' causing an error and decription failure. Should I invest in a powered hub?

When I open the License Control Centre it's all recognised. The LCC is installed in my Applications Folder where my VI is installed - any suggestions where I can move it to - could I launch it from my external drive where my VI samples (and entire sample library) are/is stored? Will moving it affect the AU part of the instalation? I have a few other external drives but my samples one is the most stable - all the others are due for a major clean-out.

I only installed on over the weekend, and checked all the updates before I started, and looking at them again, I'm on 1.01 for VI and have 1.010 Library installer (though I have already installed my libraries).

My verification was fine, but I hit repair anyway, just incase and it still said no repairs necessary.

So, not much luck at the moment. I will try again tomorrow and screen shot the responses I get, incase this will help. You can tell me how to get them to you later if you decide you need them.

Thanks for your help so far, let's hope we can get to the bottom of this soon!

  • Hi Nick,

do you get the violin section and the viola section to work or is there the same problem?

    Thanks, Paul

  • Hi Nick,

Please send the screenshots to m.veenenbos@vsl.co.at

I have my Vienna Key plugged into a powered USB hub and it never caused problems there so far, but it was not recognized when I tried to connect it f.i. directly into my computer keyboard. LCC prompted me with an error message though...

But IĀ“d say a powered hub would not be a bad investment anyway, especially since you seem to be running out of USB ports.

I am positive we will have this solved!

  • Hi Marnix and Paul

I'll get the screen shots to you today or tomorrow. I've just ordered a powered usb hub which should arrive tomorrow, but I may try a few change arounds in the meantime and see what I come up with.

I originally only loaded one instrument, a preset solo violin. When this worked I retired for the night and the next day the fun began [H]

It gradually stopped working, loading partially a couple of times and finally not at all.
It still claims to be active in the dock but with no user interface or title in the top bar.

I'll keep you posted with how my experiments go today and with any joy, tomorrow brings the dawn of a powered USB hub and we'll see where we go from there.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Nick,

what you are looking for is probably the portamento legato patch... Have a look at this.

  • So, I swapped the VI key into a usb port on the back of one of my screens, moved my logic dongle to the front of the tower and moved back to my wireless keyboard.

It now appears to be working, both standalone and in Logic, though I'm still confused as to why the key didn't like the port on the front of the tower. Tomorrow should see the start of happy days being here again with the new powered hub.

I'll keep you up to speed if things go south again.

Marnix, for the moment it seems that I don't have screen shots for you (good thing [:)] ) but again, if that changes I shall forward accordingly.

Paul, what did you want me to look at? There was no link included in your post.

Thank you for all your help.

  • Hi Nick,

just the Legato section: You have different options, and one of them is portamento with all string instruments. That is inside your Vienna Instruments.

  • Hi Paul,

The portamento section doesn't load from the Strings - Violins First Preset, but if you load a different patch in place in the matrix then put the portamento section patch back, this seems to fix it. However, I wouldn't know if there are any other settings that get changed in doing this.

Your earlier emails now become clear, so I take it that others are experiencing the same problem? This fix has worked for me - perhaps you could confirm that this doesn't interfere with settings?

Is it worth rienstalling the strings? in which case how do you do this without having to install both DVDs again? Obviously you only need go into the latter if the former isn't a good enough fix.

Though I'm sure you already had an answer, I hope this helps out others who may have had the same problem. Looking forward to an update fix when you guys have time [:D]

By the way, is it supposed to take so long to load up if you're using an AU VI in Logic. It took a good 4 minutes with only 2 VI's to load a saved tenplate. Just want to make sure this is normal. It does mean that with a saved tenplate, an orchestra could take some time!

I'll let you know if anything else rocks the boat this end. Thanks again for all your help.

    Best,
    Nick

  • Hi Nick,

I will try and reproduce this error, so far I havenĀ“t had any troubles loading any patch (and IĀ“ve been through all of them, seriously).

The loading times for Mac will be optimized in future updates soon to come.

  • You guys are working late. Do you ever sleep?

    Thanks Paul.

I would add that from the little I've had a chance to do with VI (what with all the fun and games of getting it working and having a ittle bit of life to live aside) I'm still flaberghasted at what you inventive people have managed to create - it really is mind blowing the possibilities. Not only that, but it's like you read my mind (and by all accounts everyone elses too) as to what I wanted from a sample-instrument.

    A huge thank you.

  • We are part of an experiment where austrian scientists want to find out how long you can live without sleep if you are talking to musicians exclusively...

Results will be published soon... [:D]

  • did i mention we can reply to posts actually while we're sleeping? [:P]

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Well us lesser mortals will tack a few hours on our sleep to act in credit for you. [:(]

Until tomorrow and I have an opportunity to play for longer on VI, I bid you a good night up and an intravenous supply of caffiene (or other legal substance) to support you with your endeavours. [:D]
