  • How Can We Get VI in Pro Tools under OSX?

It doesn't appear that there is a VST plug in installed in the VST folder after doing the installation on my Mac. Actually I don't see the AU unit plug in either ( I used the software installation file downloaded from the USER AREA up here).

So this can't be used in Pro Tools???

  • No Tom, its VST for the PCs and AU for the Macs. They did promise to release a RTAS version later though.

  • I'm aware of their pledge to support Pro Tools down the road with RTAS, but in the meantime, why not a VST as on the PC??

Pro Tools would seem to be at least as large a priority as Logic...

  • tom, apple encourages all developers to use AU because they consider VST to be a *legacy technology* on the mac (you can read respective statements especially in their design guides) and i'm not so sure we will ever see VST support for the x86 branch of OSX.

i can't remember now a statement from VSL mentioning a possibly upcoming RTAS version, but isn't there a kind of AU to RTAS wrapper?
    christian

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • There are plans for RTAS after having solved OSX specific issues.
This might be very soon, though.

I am not sure if VST/OSX is a good idea: which host _does_ support it?

    Thanks

  • A company called FXPansion makes a VST to RTAS wrapper that many people use with Pro Tools with no problems, however there is no Audio Units to RTAS wrapper that I am aware of. I am all for not having a VST version if there is an RTAS coming soon.

I wanted to install VI on my Mac, but now have installed it on my PC, and will have to buy something dependable like FORTE (140 dollars) just to use the new VI. Using it in Standalone on the PC is not an option since the outputs are not configurable, etc.

Please keep us updated on the progress of any RTAS development!

    Thanks so much
    Tom

  • Hi all,

I am using quite a few VST plugs in Tools on OS X no problem, using the VST-RTAS wrapper.. I havent installed any VI yet on my G5, I just installed the Winds on PC on Friday, so I havent had time to experiment yet, but can anyone give any info on whether the wrapper from FX works ok with the VIs?

It would save a long install wasted if it doesnt work, and then yikes for me as I use Tools exclusively, so I guess I'm gonna have to rethink things as I was going to just use one PC and my G5 for the VIs, with the other PCs doing other libs..

Any info would be greatly appreciated!!

    Cheers

    Paul

  • No it can't work, VI isn't a VST on the Mac, it's an Audio Unit. No Pro Tools....

  • I can't quite believe this decision myself. Why no VST for Mac??

Fortunately for me, I've recently purchased Logic (out of curiosity as much as anything) and am enjoying re-learning my skills in the new software. But I still find myself using Cubase for certain types of projects (as a life-long user) and enjoy the fact that all of my major instrument plug-ins are available to both hosts - not so with the VIs though it seems - big shame!

Actually that's a very good point. Has Steinberg actually stopped VST on a Mac? I don't think so..........
