  • Future Support for Mac PowerPC processor?

    Dear VI Developers,

I am intending to purchase a Mac system primarily to run Vienna Instruments. As you all know, the situation with Mac is a bit confusing at the moment -- if I didn't need to make a move now I'd certainly wait until the Mac-Intel desktops are ready, but unfortunately that's not an option.

My question is: if I purchase a Dual 2.7 with the Power PC processor, will Vienna Instruments guarantee (?) to support this processor in future updates? And for how long (1 year? 6 months?)? Can you offer any assurance on this?

I can well understand that optimisation of the Mac-Intel version will begin to take priority very soon (if not already!)

I am proposing to go for the Dual 2.7 rather than the Quad to benefit from using a Lynx interface. Presently Lynx offer PCI but not PCI-Express solutions (the Quad has PCI-Express only). The proposed system is below --if anyone has any comments or advice I'd be very grateful.

One further question: have Vienna Instruments published System Requirements for the Mac yet? Will the system below run a reasonable number of simultaneous VI's OK? Thanks in advance for your replies.

    Mac Dual 2.7
    2 Gig RAM
2 X 250 Gb Hard drives (IBM Deskstar)
    Lynx 2 or Lynx Aurora 8 + AES16
    Logic 7.1/7.2
    Kontakt 2
VI solo strings to begin (other VIs when affordable)

  • patrick, as long as apple supports PPC (read: unless apple declares PPC as *legacy system*) we can and will also support them.

on a not even so powerfull system (although slightly more RAM) you get 24 instances, 45.000 samples loaded and 300 stereo voices.
detailed results will be posted by paul soon

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Hello Christian,

    Many thanks for your reply.

That many stereo voices sounds impressive. Enough to make one or two composers blush, I would have thought...

Thanks again - I'll wait patiently for the Mac tests (which I since discovered from another thread are under way).

Just got off the phone with my Mac guy. He feels the same as I do - wait for the Intels.
