  • New Composition from Hetoreyn

    Hi,

Thought I'd look for some comments on this new piece.

I've been asked to do some more music for an old project of mine called 'Deep Angel'. The writers of this story have recently sent me a new draft of the screenplay and as aprt of their presentation .. to hopefully have it made into a movie .. I perform music to go with the scene animatics.

I wrote a whole albums worth of stuff years ago for them, but now I ve the VSL things are a bit different.

This piece is not finished and is a tad bass heavy. Also the violins are fairly loose and could do with tightening up abit. What I'm looking for is opinions for the panning. In this piece I have gone to make everything sound more .. 'Room' like than actual panning. So alot of things are fairly central .. with only really a -/+ 20 either side .. with a few exceptions.

This piece will be a fairly dramatic chase scene .. with rocket powered submarines .. down the panama canal.

Anyways, see what you think. As I say .. It's not finished yet it will be much longer when it is done.

  • cool, I really liked it. Does seem lacking in high frequencies and a bit muddy as Tanuj suggested. Probably is the verb mostly: the length and wetness is fine but something about it is cutting out important frequencies. I didn't hear too much bass at all either.

I'd consider adding some more non battery percussion. like tom's hand drums etc to give it that action cue flavor. also something with some really big low end for impact. storm drum would be nice for that.

  • Excellent!

Nice string ostinatos. I love that Newton-Howard/Goldenthal flavor.

The trumpet melody entrance a little over halfway through sounds too pretty for my ears. Do you have a non-VSL ff trumpet patch to layer with it to get a more "balls-out" quality? Maybe you want that sound but the brass underneath and the driving nature of the track has me yearning for a more aggressive/brassy tone.

    Anyway, great job!

  • what we need is the performance marcato brass - hopefully with some brassy quality to the sound (in refrecne to the trumpet entrance)

  • Thanks all.

Well I did say it was pretty raw at the moment [:D]

It's also too overcompressed but tha'ts cos I was having such a bad time trying to get the level high enough. Otherwise it''s too quiet.

I know what you mean about the ff trumpet .. I wish I had a really harsh one. Only have the VSL .. which as you say .. is pretty but could do with more grunt. I'll try and layer up some others and see if I can't bring it together.

Biggest problem at the moment is just tightening the ostenatos. The room sound hasn't really been established yet either. I just through a Reverb on. Overall my bigest reason for doing this demo was to see if the more centralized posistioning of the instruments felt more acceptable to listen too. Which I think it does .. rather than grotuitously panning instruments around the stereo band.

I'll finish up the composition and try to get a better mix out of it. Though I think the muddyness is down to Reverb more than mix, as I feel the positioning is about right. There is a timpani underneathe all that butt it is getting drowned out.

I suppose I'm fighting the volume alot. If I get things the right mix .. the whole piece is too quiet. How do I make this thing loud enough?

    Again thanks

  • if your monitoring on headphones yea it will sound better to have no localization of sound but in a room - esecpicaly a theatre - large monitors you get a better sound with some nice panning. as always it has to balanced and your ears have to be the judge.

  • Hey is this fun, or what?!
A really exciting piece. Sound quality has already been pointed out...
I also like your strings osti's. Reminds me more of Goldsmith than Goldenthal.
I'm a big fan of challenging action music. The brass could bite more, but it is challenging enough. Is this for a live action thing? Animation? Computer game?

  • Well, I am currently on a fairly sharp learning curve concerning mix. I suppose you could say this music piece is for a film, but it's a conceptual sketch from what I've read in the script.

The guys who wrote the scirpt are doing there best to get it turned into a movie, so I'm helping them along with some concept music for their presentations.

When I get time, IE when I've finished Elven Moods II, I'll be concentrating more on Deep Angel and my new demo CD (for film). Figure it's about time I got an agent, and I can only do that with a proper demo instead of pointing people to half mixed version of things on my site.

But what can you do when you're only really just starting out. Even though I've been doing this ten years I feel it's only now I'm starting to produce anything worth listening to. Largely thanks to the VSL.

Beat Kaufmann has given me some invaluable advice as far as my mixing goes, so in the future I will have better presentations of my early work. I've recently remixed my James Bond theme (It's not on the site yet), to experiment with the mix and where things should go. Sounds really quite nice now.

As for this piece, I will do more to it soon. Need to write a whole load of things to go with the script. Just finding my motifs and melodies at the moment.
