  • Are the Violin Legatos Improved in VI?

I've had mixed results over the last two years with legato in the Performance tool using the V14 violins. Just tonight I was playing something and even though I checked onscreen to make sure each note was overlapped, in the middle of the phrase there was one note transition that gave the dreaded "sucking sound." I adjusted the release times using the mod wheel (Herb's trick that he showed us up here awhile back) but nothing helped.

This happens every once in awhile, certainly not on every phrase, but enough to be exasperating. I finally had to overdub some strings from another library to cover the glitch.

Is the built in "performance tool" in VI improved or will I find the same problems?

    Thanks

Tom, I know that we have discussed this in the past, but if you cover the transition sample totally by setting a very high Modwheel value you can't have a sucking sound. Then just reduce it until you find where the threshold is for that sample.

Regarding your question, this is one of the worrying things about VI, if we are not going to be able to alter the "factory" settings.

  • Generally the legato transitions are working in a different, improved way in the VIs. Further we've checked and listened all samples and of course also all transitions of the final mapped instruments and made corrections if necessary.

  • I'm looking forward to demos on this very subject.

Ever since I've owned VSL, I've searched out a more fluid violin legato. If, on a spectrum, the current PE legato is on the left and portamento is on the right, then I'd welcome something right in the middle. There are some intervals in PE that get close, but for most, the transitions can be too fast for lento and adagio. I think this leads to the posts from users whose legato "isn't working." In one form or another, that subject never really goes away.

To my ears, the VSL woodwinds and some of the later brass (like the trumpet mute legato) set an amazing standard for legato performance -- fluid, seamless, and so rewarding to perform. I'd welcome any move in this direction for the strings.
