  • Weird VSL install problem

I'm currently re-installing some VSL files from the DVD's using UnRarX and have a strange problem with the VSL discs.

After expanding the first sample file on the DVD I go to drag the second file to UrarX and the Icon in the DVD window disappears! - so instead of showing say 5 .exe files only 4 show. Changing the display preferences of the window to list and back to icon makes no difference (it has disappeared from the disc list as well) Closing the DVD directory window and re-opening doesn't work either.

The only way to get the icon to show again is to eject the disc and reload. all Icons are then visible and can be expanded - but once one has been expanded the next icon that is selected disappears again!

I can add the same problem is present on my Powerbook G4 and Powermac G4/733.

Any ideas guys? - done the usual repairing permissions, etc. and haven't any other finder or display problems on my mac.

The VSL DVD's are the only discs I've encountered this with. Though I would guess the problem is on my system as all VSL discs exhibit the problem including Pro Edition and Horizon discs.

  • i've heard this from another user some months ago ... IIRC this happens with panther, right? it turned up to be a finder-issue (not saving the meta-information like type and position of symbol correctly which are stored in the .DS file).
ejecting the DVD and re-inserting it makes the files re-appear anyway. the problem is not very common and seems to be related to a certain state of updates, i think marnix noticed this effect a few times.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Glad to hear I'm not going mad... well not any quicker!

It is happenning in Tiger (10.4.4) I I have noticed the issue for almost a year now - across a few OS updates... any cures?

    thanks
