  • To topcomposer ;-)

    Hi topcomposer,
do you still use your VSL with HALion ?
In this case, I've got a few questions to you.
I only want to buy the O-Cube (not enough money & HD space [;)] ) - so here are my questions:
-Can you give me please a short step by step tutorial of the megatrigg and Mod - reprogramming in HALion ?
-Does the Orchestral Cube only contains "normal" gig-files ? (no art-files) ?
-Did you manage to import/change the entire Cube to fxp-files ?

    Thank you for your help.
    P.S.
HALion 2.0 is out now ! For registered HAL 1-users the update is nearly free.

  • hi Theiss,

As soon as I receive my update to HALion 2, I will again use it for the orchestral cube stuff - having built a Giga box a couple of months ago, I've been learning the performance set/tool, and haven't touched HALion. actually, I haven't been back into OS9 for the same amount of time - controlling Giga with Cubase SX in OS X.2..

to be fair - I didn't finish the entire job, as HALion v1 suffers badly from sample amnesia - I kept having to reload samples. I hope it's sorted with V2!

as for the Megatrigg - after reading the PDF manual for HALion, it was a little hit and miss - I'm not at my normal machine today, and my memory's a little hazy, but I'll post again with info this weekend.

  • okay, I hope this helps...

I will refer a little to the HALion manual for graphics examples

'The Modulation Section' - p10-91 - for the picture.

this bit is fun while working out which sample does what, and then is very boring to implement... I know you're not talking about the performance set, but if you'll allow me to use an example from it - any instrument's runs (up/down - with mod control)

find which samples go up and which go down. select all that go in the same direction (I think with the ctrl/apple key - [also, I can't guarantee that it works when selecting all - you might have to do them individually - it's been a while])

set 'source' to 'Mod Wheel', 'Amount' to 'Amount 1 - 100' (max - why not MIDI 127?) and 'destinatio'n to' Volume'

select the samples going in the other direction and set:
'source' to 'Amount 1 - 100', 'Amount' to 'Mod Wheel' and 'destination' to 'Volume'

both of these should be on the first mod parameter.

the effect of this is to swap direction of the runs - you can choose (trial and error, sorry) which parameter goes which way.

repeat for all patches that the VSL manual says have mod control. enjoy!
    -------

key switching - p10-96 for the picture

if you load up Vl-14 basic all, for example, and click the '+', it should expand into folders marked 'C0', 'C#0' etc. Thank God they are.

figure out which number C0 is (I think it's 24) and click the MegaTrigg button.
    set:

    Control 1: (pulldown) Switch Key: (slider) Hi - 24 - Lo - 24

    set:
Play if: Note On - AND - Controller 1

    Click OK.

    repeat for C# - 25 etc

repeat for all instruments with keyswitches.

this will give you FULL keyswitching. - You can even program in Legato instruments this way if you get the perf set. With LOTS of slow MIDI programming...

I hope this has been as clear as mud - it certainly put into perspective, for me at least, the amount of Giga and EXS work Herb's team has been putting in - doing this will take a while for the whole library in HALion - there's no real batch processing you can do. Just don't get Carpal Tunnel in your mouse hand...

    Any questions? [:)]

  • Hi Peter,
many thanks to you for the tips.
Today I will test the mod-stuff with my Demo-CD.
    One question left:
    Reprogramming for Keyswitching ????
As I now, HALion imports the Keyswitches absolutely correct, doesn't he ?
........waiting for my HAL 2 update - (still not in stock.....- aaaaaarrrggghhh) [:@] [:D]
