  • SPECIFIC PLANNING/PURCHASING QUESTIONS

To keep things simple, here are some specific purchasing questions that would be helpful to see answered in one thread.

    1. When ordering the Early Bird Special, is this order going through
    a. Vienna directly
    b. the distributor or Vienna
    c. the local retailer

    2. When ordering the Early Bird Special, do you ONLY get the organ when ordering from the Vienna site?

    3. Who runs the credit card for both purchases, and will we be sent an e-mail prior to running our card the second time to avoid ahead of time, over limit issues?

    4. For budget planning, since you've said in the forum that MIR will be available in early 2006, how much do we need to budget for it? Also, is MIR for VSL only, or can it be applied to other libraries? Even with the Pro Edition discounts, many of us still need some idea of what to plan for financially.

    5. To insure our systems are properly optimized, will VSL post the specs of the PCs you developed on? By specs, I mean a parts list.

    6. For XP64, when will Vienna Instruments be optimized for that?

    7. Except for planned new product releases, are there any planned paid software upgrades we need to know about?

    8. If we own the Pro Edition, are we getting all the extended editions including solo strings and chamber strings, or do we only get the extended solo and chamber strings if we're registered users of those libraries?

    9. What's the dongle pricing since many of us will have to put this over several machines? In one thread I read the distributors are getting the dongles at cost. I expect our Distributor to sell to us at cost, because seeing in print that you're giving the dongles to them at cost, we should be getting the same deal.

    10. Using MIDIoverLAN, how many instances are you opening per PC?

    11. I tried ordering on the VSL web site. I'm getting charged for the Standard Edition, but not for my VIP Pro Edition discount on the Extended Edition which should bring the total to $5020. Please, how is the ordering working and who's billing the credit card?

Thanks in advance for organizing this information in one thread.

B, maybe also through local dealer, that's up to our distributors and their local retailers

    2. When ordering the Early Bird Special, do you ONLY get the organ when ordering from the Vienna site?

    No

    3. Who runs the credit card for both purchases, and will we be sent an e-mail prior to running our card the second time to avoid ahead of time, over limit issues?

    The distributor

    4. For budget planning, since you've said in the forum that MIR will be available in early 2006, how much do we need to budget for it? MIR is dedicated to VSL, but it will be possible to insert external (non VSL related) audio stuff. More detailed information, if possible, is up to Dietz
Sorry, no price informations at the moment possible.

    5. To insure our systems are properly optimized, will VSL post the specs of the PCs you developed on? By specs, I mean a parts list.

It should not be a problem to give specs for the PCs, where we are testing, but I don't understand why the specs of the developing PCs are interesting.

    6. For XP64, when will Vienna Instruments be optimized for that?

When available audio hardware and demand for XP64 version is present.

    7. Except for planned new product releases, are there any planned paid software upgrades we need to know about?

    No

    8. If we own the Pro Edition, are we getting all the extended editions including solo strings and chamber strings, or do we only get the extended solo and chamber strings if we're registered users of those libraries?

You can get everything you like.
If you don't have Horizon Chamber strings you won't get discounts for the extended version of the VI Chamber strings.
If you don't have Horizon solo strings you only get discounts for solo violin and solo cello, which are included in the Pro Edition.

    9. What's the dongle pricing since many of us will have to put this over several machines? In one thread I read the distributors are getting the dongles at cost. I expect our Distributor to sell to us at cost, because seeing in print that you're giving the dongles to them at cost, we should be getting the same deal.

That's up to the distributors, and I think this will also depends on the amount of dongle you want to have.

    10. Using MIDIoverLAN, how many instances are you opening per PC?

Last test used 24 performing instances on a Pentium4 2.8 GHZ with CPU peaks at 80%.

  • WRT Point 9

This seems dubious at least. If we were to buy each product seperately surely we would receive one dongle with each product at no cost (as basically you can't use the product without the dongle).

If we buy the cube though the distributors could see this as one product and only provide one dongle free. Surely VSL you can mandate a minimum number say 4 or even 2 for users of the cube....

As I mentioned elsewhere on the forum, Steinberg charge £15 for replacement dongles, so purchasing additional dongles beyond the (hopefully) free 1 dongle will add up further costs....

Since we both use Sequoia, once the people at Magix gave TrueSpec the specs for the systems they were developing on, we built systems based on that. As a result, whenever there was a tech issue, we were all on the same system, it was easy to determine if the problem was the software or the machine.

As a result, we've always had trouble-free Sequoia machines.

Since you're now both sample company and software OEM, as Vienna Instruments release, you're going to get all kinds of new tech support issues many of which will be related back to the system.

If you make your specs available to other DAW builders, it will create a somewhat "authorized" VSL system so from samples -> VI software -> machine you have a totally coordinated system.

Also, this is very similar to the DigiDesign approach which eliminated a lot of unncessary tech support calls.

  • Yes yes yes.

Peter makes a wonderful point. Especially if we want to get predictable results. If the VI's and MIR were only Mac based we wouldn't need spec's of this nature.

Even then I would still be interested in what interfaces you used, etc.

I am not a PC user. If I choose to buy a PC DAW for MIR I would most likely go to TrueSpec for a machine because I cannot tolerate these unknown variables.

(Sorry, that's just one of my little obsessions--probably why I only own Macs)

If it doesn't matter then, hey, no harm done. Plus, I am a big fan of the Silent Stage info you people provide. I am also looking into the BlueSky speakers also because of your affiliation (and NOT an endorsement specifically) with the gear you use.

You'd think that this would be true, but one only has to look at all the problems that people have with various software on a Mac to realise that there is no easy answer.
