  • STANDARD LIBRARY vers EXTENDED LIBRARY

    IMHO
It would have been so much easier to understand if the VI standard Library was the same as the Pro Edition, and if the Extended Library was only the new articulations.

We would have pay an upgrade for the Standard Library more or less if we already had some horizon products, everybody would have been in the same case for buying the Extended Library

  • I agree, for people who already own them VSL products.

However in the long run, I think its a smart move, and will add to clarity. For new buyers its fairly simple. With the standard edition you get the standard, most common articulations and playing styles, and with the extended you get more fancy stuff.

I understand 100% why they have done it. When you think, the seperation of the Cube and the Performance set was very weird and flawed. Half the posts on the forum were from people trying to figure out what the difference between the two were. The new way of doing things makes more sense IMHO.

I find the concept very good and actually it's good to have this type of entry level.
I am a user of Chamber Strings (Horizon) and for me, there's more articulations than I need for my pop music purposes. Still, I paid 800 Euros, because the concept of the sound and the Performance Tool where convincing.
But actually I am in the customer target group for the Standard Edition. And I am very unhappy that there is no such thing as Upgrade/Sidegrade to the new Standard Edition of the Vienna Instruments.

IMHO, with an example of the Chamber Strings, the following pricing would be more appropriate (not taking those into consideration that might have bought last week)

current model for Chamber Strings owners:
Vienna Instument Standard: 495 Euros (= Full Price)
Upgrade to Extended Edition: 30 Euros (darn cheap) [[;)]]

    better model
Sidegrade/Upgrade to Vienna Instument Standard: 250 Euros
Upgrade to Extended Edition: 275 Euros [[;)]]

VSL will make enough money with this model, too.
And they give users the option of a step by step way to do it.

  • Tele,
It's good you included the type of music you write, and that explains a great deal the angle you are coming from. I respect that.

    Still,
I can't help thinking you've undervalued the importance of the Vienna instrument. There were several attempts over the weekend to diminish the role and function of the VI, and limit its potential in the need to discuss sample price. (0.0118 per sample as i understand).

And the model you propose seems reasonable at first.

But as so much of the discussion and whining revolved around the perception that new users were better off, and current users were worse off, your model would actually make the situation worse, as new users would get the standard library even cheaper, and no doubt that would be even more unacceptable to VSL 'veterans', and those sudden 'new members' who were so vocal.

It's a difficult balance for any company, but i think the exceptional discounts for current users on the extended edition is a the fairest possible.
The cube is a new product, not an extension of an old one. This moment was always going to come, as VSL stepped further into the future. I think and beleive they've held true to current users, and where possible rewarded that loyalty.
As i understand it, the standard version is just that. standard.
The extended library, of which you will benefit greatly in monetary terms, contains a far greater range of additional articulations and instrument techniques, and it seems correct that this balance is set up the way it is.

    Just my perspective.

    Regards,

    Alex.

This was meant as a model for UPGRADE/SIDEGRADE, meaning the users that own the Chamber Strings Horizon series already. The price was not a suggestion for new users. I think the pricing for the new users is good as it is.
My pricing suggestion would result in the same price to get the Extended Vienna Instrument for old users as it is now, but sidegrading to the Standard version would be possible, which currently isn't.
