  • horizon solo string vs solo string standard library

    I m a little confused.
I wish buy solo string, but I haven't understand if horizon solo string and the new solo string have the same samples and extended library is only more then before.
So the only difference between horizon and the standard is the the new instruments AU/VST?
if someone can clarify my idea
    thanks

  • Hi Christian,

you get the Vienna Instruments Standard Library, that contains many samples that you already have and totally new samples and modules, and of course the Vienna Instruments, that will change the way you think about MIDI.
The Extended Library also contains many new samples and some of the samples you already have.
All in all that´s 105.000 (!) Samples for Solo Strings!
You can use the Extended Library for 30 days to check out what you get and then you decide whether you want it.

  • 105000 samples for solo strings, wow.
The old SOLO STRINGS (Horizon) contains 50000, that makes for an increase of 100%
Is the relation gonna be the same for the Chamber Strings?
That would be 31975 times 2 = 63000 samples for Vienna Instruments Chamber Strings complete.

  • ...keep in mind, everybody, that a LOT of those samples will be used in the new Performance Trills alone. It's not necessarily a matter of lots more new sounds. My impression (possibly innaccurate) from the videos is that the Performance Trills must use approximately 6 times as many samples as the perf-legato instruments, which are already HUGE in terms of raw samples... so if you figure in 2 different playing styles for performance trills, at two dynamics, you're looking at, well... LOTS more samples!!! (you do the math!).
But the point is that these don't come out in wildly new playing styles, but rather as a greater variety and realism in the conventional playing styles.
On the other hand, there is the new Zigane style (which I'm VERY excited about)... The main to keep in mind is that any time they add a new articulation, there's chromatic sampling, (possibly) interval sampling and so on, to sample, at EACH dynamic level. So even adding something like Zigane requires a huge number of samples to be added to the library.

    clear as mud?

this is the crux, really, and it's what makes the SC and the Extended library, in combination, a big big jump.

Having just watched all the videos again, I find it easier to understand that this is no way "just an upgrade".
