  • Confusion with VSL Studio Solo Strings Expression Map

Hi there, I installed all expression maps via Vienna Assistant's Dorico Wizard. In Dorico I use VSL Studio Solo strings and use the respective expression map, e.g. for solo violoncello -> "VSL Studio Solo Strings - Violoncello 1".

For a simple Legato phrase, Dorico plays fast repetitions for each note in a legato phrase. I looked at how the "legator" playback technique is programmed and notice the following key switches for legato:

These key switches make no sense to me. D1 points clearly "Phrases". Why?

I mean, I'm not new to VSL and Dorico, I have used many times VSL expression maps in Dorico for other type of instruments and those work pretty fine, but for solo strings at least for legato they don't. I have not spend more time to investigate into other potential key switch errors for solo strings, but before I correct them all by myself, I want to get some feedback from other users and hopefully also from VSL team who defined these key switches.

    Thanks,

    Soenke

  • Hello Soenke!

The Dorico expression maps for Studio Solo Strings have been designed to work with the "basic" (non-VelXF) Factory presets. They also works with the "sordino basic" and "Merged basic" presets of the Studio Solo Strings sordino collection.

If you are in doubt which preset an expression maps is made for, you can always check out the Expression Map Data window. There you can find a description.

If you use a playback template that you have saved with Dorico Wizard, the correct presets and expression maps get loaded automatically.

    Best regards,

  • Hello Andi!

Thanks for the quick response. This is very helpful information. Are there any plans to offer expression Maps also for VelXF presets?

    Best regards,

    Soenke

  • Hello Soenke!

There are no such plans. I think it would cause more confusion than it would help. Did you check out our optimizing tips about controlling dynamics with Dorico yet?

  • Hello Andi,

Thanks for the link. Although I would think I'm pretty much familiar with using expression maps and modifying MIDI CC and other params for individual optimization, it's great to have that link in reference.
