  • Strange Tremolo Effect on Bluthner Vintage Presets

The Bluthner piano, when it's set on the "Vintage Decca Tree", has an strong "vibration" in the tone. It's a tremolo, actually, in a regular pattern. Two big dips in volume, then two more after a brief pause, and so on. This happens on the Room-Mix Vintage preset as well as the Surround to Stereo Downmix Vintage preset.

I've checked all the other presets, and they are all OK. I have also checked all my other Synchron pianos (Bosendorfer Imperial, Yamaha CFX, Bosendorfer 280VC, Fazioli F308, Fazioli F212, and the Steinway D-274). None of them have this problem.

Any idea of what's going on? Is a correction in the works? I like the Vintage preset, but it's unusable.

  • Hi @vanceen,

What you are hearing is a phasing effect and a delayed Plate Reverb sent through a cabinet speaker. If you wish to make creative adjustments, you can always dive into the details in the Mix tab and switch to the FX view. Best, Andreas

    Thanks, Andreas.

If I turn off the delay, reverb, and speaker simulation altogether, the tremolo effect is still there.

I tried listening to the Condenser mic alone (with all the other mics and effects off), and the tremolo is there, at any setting of the fader.

If I turn off the Condenser mic and turn up the Ribbon mic (by itself), there is no tremolo. Same for the Sphere, Mid1, Mid2, Main, and Surround. With Main-C by itself, I hear the tremolo, but it is much less bad than with the Condenser itself.

I'm finding it hard to understand how a single mic position, unmixed with any effects, could be suffering from phasing problems. It looks to me as if the phasing explanation, although plausible, may not be the right diagnosis.

Not trying to be stubborn, but it appears that there is a problem with the Condenser mic sound itself. I can always use the ribbon or even another piano, but it doesn't seem right that such a large part of the instrument would not be useable.

I would appreciate it if someone could check to see if the problem is reproducible. Perhaps there is some kind of corruption of my samples for the condensor mic (though that doesn't seem likely).

  • Hi @vanceen,

I'd love to hear the effect you get, can you please send some mp3s to support@vsl.co.at, or maybe a link to a video that shows the steps you are taking?
